Yes—Futurism reported on March 21, 2024, that eBay listings offered objects described as pieces of SpaceX’s Starship heat shield. The report also said one tile had sold, but it did not independently authenticate the items. Its prices describe a historical snapshot, not listings or market values you can assume are current.
What the March 2024 eBay report said
Futurism’s March 21, 2024 report described purported ceramic heat-shield tiles from Starship’s test flight debris being offered on eBay. It reported a range of listings, from a broken tile listed for $30 to a mostly intact tile listed for well over $2,000.
The report separately said a search of sold items showed one tile had sold for $3,395 on the Monday before publication. It also described an asking price of $7,500 for another tile and said it was unclear whether that item would sell. The $7,500 figure was a listing price, not a completed sale; the $3,395 figure was a sale Futurism reported, not an independently audited transaction or a market average. None of these figures establishes what similar items cost now.

One seller told Futurism they found a tile floating near the jetties at South Padre Island and had notified SpaceX. That is the seller’s account as reported by the outlet; the article does not provide independent confirmation that the individual object came from Starship.

Futurism also quoted an anonymous eBay seller who said they had contacted SpaceX’s debris-reporting hotline and email: “SpaceX ‘thanked me for the information and said I could ship the pieces to them or keep them.’” The same seller said, “I counted five pieces recovered by three of us.” These statements describe what that seller said happened. They are not named official testimony, proof of the pieces’ origin, or a general statement of SpaceX policy or ownership rules.
How SpaceX says it handles debris recovery
SpaceX says it works with an experienced global response provider to retrieve debris that may wash ashore in South Texas or Mexico after test operations. The company’s description is available on its reusability updates page. That recovery arrangement provides context for the seller accounts, but it does not authenticate any particular eBay item.

It is not an invitation to search for fragments. Do not enter a launch site, restricted area, or debris field to look for material. A listing or anecdote cannot establish that an item is safe to handle or that collecting it is permitted.

An eBay description and a seller’s account are claims, not forensic authentication. The Futurism report does not establish independent provenance for each listing. For a purported flight fragment, useful evidence would include a documented chain of custody and credible independent authentication; the report does not say that sellers supplied those things.

Keep the categories separate when evaluating a listing:
- Purported flight debris: an object a seller claims came from a Starship test. The claim alone does not verify origin.
- Official or replica collectible: a manufactured keepsake, not recovered flight hardware. Futurism also mentioned bronze Starship tile collectibles; those are distinct from the purported debris listings.
- Price evidence: an asking price tells you what a seller requested, while a reported completed sale is a different kind of evidence. Neither by itself establishes authenticity or a reliable current value.
FAA oversight is a separate safety process
The Federal Aviation Administration’s mishap process concerns flight safety and corrective action, not authentication of marketplace items. The FAA says operators conduct mishap investigations under its oversight and that it considers issues including unplanned debris and flight-safety matters in return-to-flight decisions. For historical context, the FAA said its closed investigation of the April 20, 2023 Starship mishap identified 63 corrective actions. That is regulatory history; it does not verify the origin of a tile offered for sale.
