Yes—but the documented accounts are limited. In an August 2023 investigation, The San Francisco Standard interviewed four Cruise riders who said they had sex or hooked up in driverless vehicles in San Francisco and provided ride receipts. The publication said it could not find a source reporting sex in a Waymo. That is evidence of several reported incidents, not proof that the behavior is common or that it has never happened in a Waymo.
What the San Francisco reporting established
The Standard’s August 11, 2023, investigation by Liz Lindqwister described four separate Cruise riders who reported having sex or hooking up in San Francisco robotaxis. The riders provided receipts to verify their trips. The publication changed their names and withheld exact ride dates to protect their privacy.
The investigation said it had not found a source who reported having sex in a Waymo. That finding is limited to what the publication was able to report; it does not establish that no such incident has ever occurred. The article is about Cruise riders’ accounts, not a measured comparison of the two services.
How much does this tell us about frequency?
There is no authoritative prevalence estimate in the reporting. Four interviewed riders are four accounts gathered by one publication, not a sample that can show what share of robotaxi passengers have sex, how often incidents happen, or whether the behavior is increasing. Calling it widespread or a trend would go beyond the available evidence.
Does a driverless taxi cabin mean privacy?
No. A vehicle without a human driver should not automatically be treated as an unmonitored private room. In the 2023 Standard story, Cruise said it records interior video for safety and support, and records audio only during active support calls. A Waymo spokesperson told the publication that recordings may be reviewed in specific situations involving cleanliness, safety, crashes, or missing items.
Those are company statements reported in 2023, not an independently audited or current account of recording, access, or retention practices. Policies and features may have changed since then. Riders should check the relevant service’s current privacy information rather than assume that a cabin is unrecorded or that every recording is routinely watched.
What do the rider rules say?
The Standard quoted Cruise’s terms as asking riders not to do anything that could “potentially make others uncomfortable” and barring threatening, confrontational, discriminatory, harassing, disrespectful, offensive, or inappropriate conduct. A Cruise spokesperson said violations could result in account suspension or termination. The article also reported that both services expected vehicles to be left reasonably clean and could charge for dirty vehicles.

These rules do not explicitly approve sexual activity. They describe broad standards for passenger conduct and vehicle condition; the 2023 reporting does not establish how either company would assess every possible situation under its terms. Current policies may differ.

Consensual behavior is a separate issue from harassment
Separate reporting by The Washington Post on December 22, 2024 covered four Waymo passengers who described harassment or threats during rides. That is a distinct safety issue, not evidence about consensual sexual activity. Waymo spokesperson Ethan Teicher said the company took such events seriously and described harassment or attempted entry during a ride as “extremely rare.” The report said riders could use the app to pull over or change the next stop or destination; a Waymo spokesperson said support agents could also make similar changes but could not redirect a vehicle’s specific route.
