Reports say a Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) file-sharing vulnerability exposed personally identifiable information, including Social Security numbers, for millions of people. If you receive a notice, verify it through an official Defense Department channel; meanwhile, check your credit reports and consider a free credit freeze with all three major bureaus.
What happened in the DMDC breach?
TechRadar reported that unauthorized access to DMDC files was possible from October 2025 through July 2026. It reported 2.76 million affected living individuals and 294,000 deceased individuals. Federal News Network reported nearly 2.8 million living individuals and the same 294,000 deceased individuals. These are figures reported by those outlets, not a published DMDC count of individually confirmed victims.
The reported information included names, dates of birth, contact details, Social Security numbers and military occupational information. TechRadar also listed sex and race. The reports do not establish that every listed field appeared in every person’s record.

Upon discovery, DMDC immediately remediated the vulnerability.” The official reportedly said there was no evidence of misuse at that time. That is a statement about what was known then, not a guarantee that exposed data will never be misused.

Can you tell whether your information was exposed?
The reports do not establish a complete public list of affected people, and the available reporting does not confirm whether a particular person’s record was among the files accessed. Do not assume you are either included or excluded based only on military service or a lack of a breach letter. If you receive a notification, verify it independently through a known official DMDC or Defense Department channel rather than using links, phone numbers or reply addresses in an unexpected message.
What should you do now?
- Review your credit reports. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends ordering free credit reports after an SSN exposure and checking for accounts or activity you do not recognize.
- Choose a credit freeze or fraud alert. The FTC says both protections are free. A freeze requires contacting each of the three credit bureaus; an initial fraud alert can be requested from one bureau. Their practical differences are outlined below.
- Use monitoring offered in an authentic breach notice. The FTC advises taking advantage of free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance offered by the affected organization. Check the notice’s authenticity and terms before enrolling.
- Act promptly if you find signs of misuse. Report unfamiliar accounts, collection activity, benefit claims or tax filings to the relevant institution. Use IdentityTheft.gov for the FTC’s recovery plan and reporting steps.
- Keep an eye on related records. Watch financial accounts as well as tax and employment records for activity you did not initiate.
Credit freeze or initial fraud alert?

The FTC does not state a processing-time comparison for these steps in the guidance summarized here. If you choose a freeze, contact all three bureaus rather than assuming one request covers them all. A fraud alert is a separate option, not a substitute for checking your reports.

Does fixing the vulnerability remove the risk?
No. Remediating the file-sharing path can stop that route of access, but it cannot change an exposed SSN the way you can change a password. Be cautious about messages or calls that use personal details to sound convincing, and do not provide additional information or click a link simply because the sender appears to know something about you.

Is this the same as the 2015 OPM breach?
No connection between the DMDC incident and the 2015 Office of Personnel Management (OPM) background-investigation breach is established by the reporting cited here. Similar involvement of federal personnel information is not evidence that the incidents were linked.

What DoD privacy guidance does—and does not—say
Washington Headquarters Services’ privacy program tells personnel to report suspected or confirmed personally identifiable information breaches immediately. Its general guidance describes a “major incident” as one likely to cause demonstrable harm to national security, foreign relations, the economy, public confidence, civil liberties, or public health and safety. That general definition does not establish that this specific DMDC incident met every element or was classified as a major incident.
