Pennsylvania has awarded more than $7.3 million to 249 schools in 29 counties through the federal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) for the 2026–27 school year. The grants help eligible elementary schools make fresh produce available to students during the school day; they are not consumer vouchers or a change to ordinary school-lunch funding.
Which schools received the grants?
The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) publishes the 2026–27 award list by county, sponsor, school building and total award. Check the official PDE FFVP page and school-level list to see whether a particular school is included and how much it received.
The statewide total is more than $7.3 million across 249 schools, not a uniform payment to each school. Individual awards vary, so the state list is the appropriate source for a building’s grant amount.
What is the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program?
FFVP is a federal program administered in Pennsylvania by PDE. It provides students with fresh fruit or vegetables during the school day, with the stated aim of increasing produce consumption and supporting children’s diets and health. A 2024 PDE program description says the produce is offered free and separately from breakfast or lunch, in one or more areas of the school during the day. That description provides program context; the 2026–27 award list and announcement govern the current grants.

Which schools are eligible, and how are awards prioritized?
Pennsylvania’s stated criteria are that a school must be an elementary school, participate in the National School Lunch Program, and have a free- and reduced-price eligibility rate of at least 50 percent. Funding is awarded annually and depends on available federal funds. Among schools that meet the conditions and apply, those with higher eligibility rates receive priority.

What can schools buy, and must they buy locally?
Schools may purchase fresh produce through wholesalers, brokers, local grocery stores and other retailers. The state also names farmers’ markets, orchards and direct purchases from community growers as possible sources. Local buying is an option, not a stated requirement for receiving the grant.
Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said local purchasing can keep school spending in nearby communities, support farmers and reduce shipping costs. The announcement presents those as potential benefits of local sourcing; it does not establish a required local-purchase share or report measured savings.
