The clearest sign that an academic peer reviewer is reviewing now is a current assignment marked in progress in the journal’s editorial system. To verify recent completed work, check a dated activity report or ask the journal office. A public profile, old certificate, or annual acknowledgment can show past activity, but it does not by itself prove the person has an active assignment.
What counts as reviewing now?
Peer review has distinct stages: a journal may invite someone, the person may accept, and then they submit a review. An invitation alone does not mean the reviewer is doing the work. An accepted assignment marked in progress is the most direct evidence of a current review; a dated completion record shows work finished in the past.
For journals connected to Editorial Manager, Elsevier’s Reviewer Hub separates invitations from in-progress reviews. After a reviewer accepts an invitation, the assignment should appear under Reviews in Progress, usually almost instantly but sometimes after a few minutes. Elsevier Reviewer Hub overview.

- Check for an active assignment. Ask the reviewer to show an in-progress assignment and its current due date in the relevant journal system. If the assignment is confidential, the journal office can confirm status without disclosing manuscript details.
- Request a dated record of completed reviews. Ask for activity covering a defined period, such as the past year. Elsevier’s Reviewer History Report can be customized by date range and includes journals, completed-review counts, manuscript titles, and completion dates. Elsevier guidance on Reviewer History Reports.
- Corroborate with a publisher-backed public record. An ORCID peer-review entry may support a claim when a participating publisher has supplied the record. Elsevier says reviewers cannot enter these data themselves. Some Elsevier journals also acknowledge reviewer names in annual editorials. These records may be delayed, limited, or not comprehensive, so treat them as corroboration rather than proof of current work. Elsevier reviewer recognition information.
- Resolve gaps with the journal or publisher. If an expected review is missing from a report or profile, ask whether the activity is attached to another account or email address, or whether the reviewer data need refreshing.
How to judge the evidence
| Evidence | What it can establish | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Accepted assignment marked in progress | A review is currently assigned in that journal system. | That the review has been submitted, or that the person is reviewing for other journals. |
| Dated publisher activity report | Completed reviews and their dates within the report’s coverage. | Current work, or a complete record across unrelated publishers and platforms. |
| ORCID peer-review entry or journal acknowledgment | Publisher-backed corroboration of recognized past review activity, where available. | Real-time status or a comprehensive record of all review work. |
| Certificate or self-reported profile | A claimed or documented history, depending on its source and details. | A current assignment or independently verified recent activity. |
Judge any evidence by its recency, directness, source, and coverage. A journal-system status is more direct for a current assignment; a dated report is more useful for completed work. Public records are easier to inspect but may cover only one publisher’s activity.

Why a missing record does not prove inactivity
Review activity can appear incomplete when a reviewer has multiple Editorial Manager accounts or uses different email addresses. Elsevier describes account consolidation and refreshing reviewer data as remedies for missing or incomplete history. Check for account or data-linking problems before concluding that no recent activity exists. Elsevier guidance on Reviewer History Reports.
Check the system’s coverage
Reviewer Hub is connected to almost all journals using Editorial Manager, according to Elsevier; it is not a universal record of peer review across publishers or editorial platforms. A clean or empty Elsevier history therefore says nothing definitive about work done elsewhere. Confirm records with the relevant journal or publisher. Elsevier Reviewer Hub overview.

Choose a recency window that fits your purpose
There is no universal cutoff in the cited publisher materials for when a reviewer counts as “still reviewing.” State the period you mean—for example, whether you want evidence of a completed review during the past year—and use dates from a report or journal confirmation. That makes the question verifiable without treating one arbitrary interval as a publishing-wide standard.
