PeekIt is a Windows file-preview utility built to let you select a file and press Space, much like macOS Quick Look. Its author, kobaltGIT, says the compiled installer is about 3.4 MB. The project’s design centers on three challenges: catching the Spacebar shortcut without breaking file renaming or typing, supporting previews through web-based plugins, and avoiding reads that could trigger downloads of cloud-only OneDrive files.
What PeekIt does
PeekIt targets Windows 10 and 11 and is intended to preview a selected file when you press the Spacebar, rather than requiring you to open a separate desktop application. The project’s author describes support for images, PDFs, code, archives, and other formats through bundled previewers and plugins. The original project account is kobaltGIT’s build article.
The author identifies Rust, Tauri v2, and Svelte 5 as the core stack. Rust handles the Windows-specific core and keyboard hook; Tauri manages communication between components and application windows; Svelte 5 provides the frontend. The app uses WebView2 to render web content.

How it avoids interfering with typing
A global Spacebar shortcut can be disruptive in Windows Explorer: while renaming a file or typing into an editable field, Space should enter a space rather than open a preview. The author says PeekIt’s low-level keyboard hook checks the active context and passes the key through when an editable Explorer field is focused. That context check is central to making a Quick Look-style shortcut usable instead of hijacking ordinary text entry.

How previews and plugins are organized
PeekIt’s bundled previewers are described as covering font files, 3D models, DOCX documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. For additional formats, the project uses web plugins that run in iframes and communicate with the app through postMessage. This design lets preview content be organized as separate plugins rather than placing every format handler in the Windows core.
The author describes the iframe arrangement as isolation, but the available account does not establish an independent security audit. Treat the architecture as a stated implementation approach, not proof that plugins are secure against every threat.

What happens with cloud-only OneDrive files
Files On-Demand can show a file in Explorer before its contents are present locally. According to kobaltGIT, PeekIt checks attributes including FILE_ATTRIBUTE_RECALL_ON_DATA_ACCESS and SPARSE_FILE before reading file contents. The author says a cloud-only item receives a metadata placeholder instead of prompting a download. This is the project author’s description of its behavior, not an independently verified test.

kobaltGIT wrote, “The entire compiled installer is just ~3.4 MB.” The same 2026 article reports figures for PeekIt v1.3.2 and compares them with QuickLook and PowerToys Peek. These are the author’s reported values, not an independent benchmark: the article does not provide a test-machine configuration or a fully reproducible methodology.

The figures can indicate what the author aimed to optimize, but they are not a controlled, independently validated comparison. The article does not establish common test conditions, so they should not be treated as proof that one utility will use less memory or respond faster on a particular PC.
