PEAK-System’s CAN FD range covers four different jobs: connecting a PC to a CAN FD bus, adding configurable I/O and CANopen FD capability, bridging serial devices to CAN, and collecting navigation and motion data. For PC-based monitoring or development, start with PCAN-USB FD. For CANopen FD I/O, examine the specific PCAN-MicroMod FD model, firmware mode, and license before choosing: support varies by model and is not simply a feature of every unit as shipped.
What changes with CAN FD?
CAN FD (Flexible Data-Rate) allows a frame to carry up to 64 data bytes, compared with the smaller payload of classic CAN, and can use a faster bit rate in the data phase. The actual rate depends on the hardware and network design. PEAK specifies a data-phase rate of up to 12 Mbit/s for PCAN-USB FD; that figure is a product maximum, not a guarantee that every bus can operate at that speed.
PEAK’s PCAN-USB FD supports both ISO and Non-ISO CAN FD modes. That matters when connecting to equipment configured for different CAN FD specifications: the interface must be set to a mode compatible with the other nodes. CAN FD is not a substitute for confirming the bus configuration, wiring, and timing requirements of the equipment being tested.

PCAN-USB FD: a PC connection for test and development
PCAN-USB FD is the direct choice when a computer needs to monitor or work with a CAN or CAN FD network. PEAK lists a 1 μs timestamp resolution, measurement of error frames and overload conditions, and the ability to generate induced errors. These features make it useful not only for ordinary bus access but also for examining fault behavior.

The interface includes PCAN-View for monitoring and PCAN-Basic development interfaces for software integration. PEAK’s product specifications list CAN FD data-field bit rates from 25 kbit/s through 12 Mbit/s, support for ISO and Non-ISO modes, and galvanic isolation up to 500 V. Treat each as a specification of this interface; the maximum rate and isolation rating do not establish what a complete bus or installation can safely support.
PCAN-MicroMod FD: configurable I/O and CANopen FD
PCAN-MicroMod FD modules are embedded controllers rather than PC adapters. Their combination of microcontroller, CAN FD interface, and configurable I/O lets a module read inputs, drive outputs, and communicate over the bus. PEAK describes the family as independently configurable, so multiple modules can be set up on the same bus for different I/O roles.

The family includes Evaluation, Analog, Digital, ECU, and DR CANopen Digital 1 variants. The exact I/O complement and physical characteristics depend on the selected model. The evaluation manual’s operating-mode table distinguishes CAN, CAN FD, CANopen, and CANopen FD availability by model; do not assume every variant supports every mode.

CANopen FD is a firmware and licensing decision
PEAK’s PCAN-MicroMod FD Digital product information says the family can alternatively run CANopen firmware, with licenses available from Embedded Systems Academy. PEAK identifies Embedded Systems Academy as its CANopen firmware licensing partner and also references Micro CANopen-based solutions for selected programmable hardware. The relevant model, firmware, and license therefore need to be confirmed together; a CAN FD-capable module alone does not prove that CANopen FD is enabled or included.

For supported CANopen operation, PEAK’s evaluation manual describes CiA 301 and CiA 1301 communication profiles and CiA 401/401-B/F device profiles. These profile references indicate the protocols and device-profile framework documented for the product; they do not establish support for every profile feature on every module or custom configuration.
Keep firmware updates in view
PEAK’s CANopen firmware version history records version 1.12.6 dated 2025-10-23, including fixes concerning frequency and duty-cycle boundaries and 16-bit analog output representation. The preceding 1.12.5 entry, dated 2025-01-30, lists minor improvements. The history also records earlier CANopen FD-related capabilities, including CANopen FD object 1010h reporting, USDO remote requests, USDO writes with unknown data types, and SYNC-counter support in TPDOs.

PEAK explicitly warns that updating the CANopen firmware also updates the regular PCAN-MicroMod FD firmware, and vice versa. Plan and validate firmware changes with that coupling in mind, particularly where an application depends on a specific operating mode or behavior.

Newer integration products extend CAN FD beyond PC adapters
PCAN-RS-232 FD connects serial equipment
PCAN-RS-232 FD is intended for machines, PLCs, sensors, and actuators that expose RS-232 but need to exchange data on a CAN or CAN FD network. Its programmable C/C++ environment is useful when conversion must follow application-specific rules rather than a fixed pass-through. PEAK says the product comes with a GCC ARM development package and examples.

PCAN-GPS Pro FD combines navigation and motion sensing
PCAN-GPS Pro FD brings a GNSS receiver together with a magnetometer, gyroscope, and accelerometer in a configurable measurement module. PEAK lists a u-blox NEO-M9N receiver, navigation output up to 25 Hz, and CAN FD transmission up to 10 Mbit/s. It can transmit using CAN 2.0 A/B or CAN FD. Its aluminum housing is specified as IP50 or IP54 depending on the sealing plugs fitted, so choose the applicable rating based on the actual configuration.
What the 2025 roadmap does—and does not—establish
PEAK’s November 2025 catalog lists CAN (FD), CANopen (FD), and custom firmware operating modes across the PCAN-MicroMod FD family. It also described J1939 (FD) support as planned for Q1 2026. That is a historical roadmap statement, not confirmation that the feature shipped or is currently available. The cited material does not establish its present release status, so verify current availability with PEAK before selecting hardware for a J1939 (FD) project.
Choose by the connection or function you need
- PC diagnostics, bus monitoring, or software development: choose PCAN-USB FD as the PC-side connection, then confirm the required connector, ISO mode, data-phase rate, isolation, and software interface.
- Distributed industrial I/O with CANopen FD: compare the PCAN-MicroMod FD Digital and DR CANopen Digital 1 options, then verify the exact model’s operating-mode support, firmware, I/O, and license.
- RS-232 equipment joining a CAN network: consider PCAN-RS-232 FD when the serial-to-bus conversion needs programmable application logic.
- Position and motion data over CAN FD: consider PCAN-GPS Pro FD when its navigation and inertial sensors, update rate, transmission rate, and enclosure configuration fit the application.
These products occupy different layers of a system: PCAN-USB FD connects a computer to the bus; MicroMod FD handles configurable embedded I/O; RS-232 FD bridges a serial device; and GPS Pro FD supplies measurement data. They are complementary options, not interchangeable versions of one adapter.
