Short answer: PDRN is an intriguing DNA-derived skincare ingredient, but current evidence does not show that you need it in your routine—or that a topical serum delivers the effects studied with injections. Treat it as an optional product, not a proven essential.
What is PDRN?
Polydeoxyribonucleotide, or PDRN, is made of DNA fragments. A 2022 review describes PDRN commonly extracted from salmon trout or chum salmon and reports molecular weights of 50 to 1,500 kDa. “Salmon DNA” is a shorthand, not a full description of every product.
Researchers have proposed biological mechanisms involving adenosine A2A receptor activation, nucleotide salvage pathways, and tissue repair. These ideas provide a rationale for study; they do not establish visible cosmetic results from a particular product.
PDRN and polynucleotide (PN) are related DNA-derived materials, but they are not interchangeable terms in clinical research. A 2026 review describes PDRN as shorter-chain material and PN as longer-chain material, with differing proposed actions. Evidence about one material or treatment should not automatically be applied to another product sold as “salmon DNA.”

Does PDRN skincare work?
The answer depends on the route and the product. Human studies include injectable treatments and post-procedure recovery, but those findings do not prove that a topical serum or cream has the same effects.
What studies of injections show
A 2025 systematic review searched research published through January 2024 and included nine aesthetic PN injection studies involving 219 patients. The studies were rated low to moderate in quality, varied in technique and treatment site, and were too heterogeneous for a meta-analysis. The authors called for more rigorous studies. This is limited evidence about injectable PN treatments, not evidence that an over-the-counter PDRN formula works.

What broader clinical findings suggest
A 2026 narrative review describes human findings in areas such as re-epithelialization, redness, scarring, and recovery after procedures. It also notes small samples, few aesthetic randomized controlled trials, variable formulations, and limited long-term follow-up. The findings may support further investigation of PDRN or PN as an adjunct in specific contexts; they do not establish a standalone anti-aging treatment.
A professional consensus from the Association of Cutaneous Surgeons of India Task Force discusses reports involving skin texture, scars, pigmentation, and ulcers. It places PDRN among emerging dermatology treatments and cautions more broadly that such treatments can have questionable efficacy, unknown long-term safety, or no standardized protocol.

Topical serum or clinic procedure: what is the difference?

Regulatory status is specific to the product, route, indication, and country. A 2026 review reports that Italy’s AIFA approved PDRN in 1994 for specified skin-ulcer and dystrophic connective-tissue indications. That does not establish approval for every cosmetic injectable or in every jurisdiction.
How to decide whether to add a PDRN product
- Start with your goal. Do not buy a topical product on the assumption that it will reproduce an injection’s effects or heal wounds; the evidence described here does not establish either claim for topical PDRN.
- Assess the whole formula. Consider all disclosed ingredients, the product’s suitability for your skin, and any relevant sensitivities—not just the PDRN label. Compare the concentration if the brand discloses it, but a concentration alone does not prove a benefit.
- Look for finished-product evidence. Prefer claims backed by human studies of the actual formula and the intended use. Evidence about a different ingredient, formulation, or injection is not a substitute.
- For a procedure, verify specifics with a clinician. Ask which product is proposed, what indication it is intended to address, what evidence applies to that use, and what its regulatory status is where you live.
- Weigh value against uncertainty. A topical PDRN product is an optional purchase. Consider its cost and tolerability alongside better-supported steps in your own routine; the evidence does not make PDRN a necessary addition.
Safety and regulatory questions
It is not justified to describe every PDRN product as risk-free. The ACSI Task Force consensus says of the emerging treatments it discusses: “Most of these treatments are unregulated, unapproved, with unknown long term-safety data.” This is a general caution about that group of treatments, not a blanket finding about every PDRN product or every country.

For an injection, consult an appropriately qualified clinician and check the specific product’s status and intended use in your jurisdiction. Do not infer safety or approval from the ingredient name alone.
