If your PC started freezing or showing a black screen after installing a Sapphire Radeon HD 6850, first identify when the failure happens. A black screen before POST points to a different problem than one that begins when Windows loads the AMD driver. Check the card’s seating, power connection and display path before assuming the graphics card is faulty.
Pinpoint when the screen goes black
“No power,” “no display” and “no boot” describe different problems. A PC that powers on but shows no signal is not necessarily failing to start. Note the last stage you can see and whether the computer remains responsive.
- Before POST or the firmware screen: Focus first on the card installation, its power connection, the monitor and the selected display output.
- During Windows startup: Note whether Windows reaches the login screen or whether the screen goes black earlier.
- When the AMD driver installs or activates: A Windows or driver issue becomes more plausible, though it does not prove the card itself is healthy.
- During use: Record whether the PC freezes completely, audio continues, or the monitor reports “no signal.”
Write down when the symptoms began and any hardware, driver, firmware or settings change that immediately preceded them. AMD’s boot-symptom guidance distinguishes no-display symptoms from no-power and no-boot cases; its stability guidance also lists BIOS configuration, overclocking or heat, unsupported or faulty hardware, and operating-system or driver problems as possibilities—not a diagnosis of your PC.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Reseat the card and verify its power connection
- Shut down the PC, switch off the power supply and unplug it from the wall before opening the case. Never connect or disconnect an internal GPU power plug while the PC is powered.
- Check that the HD 6850 is fully seated in the primary PCIe slot and secured in place.
- Check that any power connector required by your exact card is firmly connected. Do not assume all Sapphire HD 6850 board revisions use identical connectors.
AMD recommends checking GPU seating and PSU connections as part of stability troubleshooting. Sapphire provides a customer service center and driver-download page; use the exact card model or revision when seeking board-specific information.

- PCI-Express 2.0 x16 bus interface
- 256-bit DDR5 memory interface
- Microsoft DirectX 11 Support
- Microsoft Windows 7 Support, 1xHDMI, 1x Display port, 1xDVI
- ATI Eyefinity Technology, support up to 3 displays
Rule out a display connection problem
- Confirm that the monitor is set to the input connected to the graphics card.
- If available, try a known-good cable, another output on the card, or another monitor input, changing one item at a time.
- If the motherboard has integrated graphics, its video output may help establish whether the rest of the PC can boot. A successful picture from that output does not, by itself, prove the discrete card is faulty.
Return the PC to a basic configuration
Remove any CPU or GPU overclock and undo recent firmware changes if appropriate. Temporarily remove PCIe risers and nonessential accessories. AMD recommends stock settings and removing risers or custom accessories while investigating instability. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which change affects the symptom.
Use the right legacy driver if Windows is the trigger
The Radeon HD 6850 is on AMD’s legacy support track. AMD says no additional driver releases are planned for HD 6000 graphics products in its legacy graphics support notice. The HD 6850’s AMD model download page lists historical Windows 10 and Windows 7 packages, including:

- Metal backplate installation reduces the risk of graphics card deformation.
- Smooth, High-Frame-Rate Gaming – Say goodbye to choppy gameplay! The delivers fluid, stutter-free performance, even at high frame rates. Its enhanced contrast and color bring out stunning visuals with sharp, vibrant detail, making your gaming more immersive than ever.
- Catalyst 15.7.1 WHQL: released July 29, 2015.
- Crimson Edition 16.2.1 Beta: released March 1, 2016.
These are legacy packages, not current releases. Check the AMD page for your exact Windows version and 32- or 64-bit architecture; do not assume a current Radeon Adrenalin package supports this card. If the failure appears tied to the driver, AMD recommends a clean graphics-driver installation. If Windows will not start normally, use Windows recovery options and follow the instructions for your specific version rather than attempting changes from an unusable session.

Check power against the whole system
A power-supply problem is possible, but the card name alone is not enough to determine whether your PSU is suitable. AMD recommends checking PSU suitability against system requirements. The available HD 6850 specifications do not identify the power needs of your particular Sapphire board revision, and the PSU model, other components and connector condition are unknown. Identify those details and consult the exact board and system specifications before deciding whether power is the cause.

- Silver plated PCB and all solid capacitors can provide lower temperatures, higher efficiency, and stability
- In any situation, the low-key Ultra ITX size (SFF or MINI ITX case) is perfect
- High speed video memory can ensure speeds of up to 6000 MHz, providing a smooth gaming and application experience.
- Supports 8K resolution display port output.
- Metal backplate installation reduces the risk of graphics card deformation.
Isolate the card from the rest of the PC
If you have access to compatible known-good hardware, swap-test one component at a time:
- Test the HD 6850 in a known-good compatible PC.
- Test a known-good GPU in the affected PC.
AMD recommends reseating and, where feasible, swapping the GPU. Results from these tests provide stronger evidence about whether the problem follows the card or stays with the host PC than the timing of the symptom alone.

- Dual HDMI display support: Two HDMI outputs support two monitors at the same time, providing an extended workspace for office tasks, web browsing and everyday computer use.
- Radeon HD 6570 graphics: Built with the AMD Radeon HD 6570 graphics processor for upgrading compatible desktop computers and replacing basic or older display hardware.
- 2GB GDDR3 memory: Equipped with 2GB GDDR3 video memory and a 64-bit memory interface for routine visual applications, video playback and multi-window operation.
- Low-profile compact design: The small low-profile form fits compatible compact desktop computers while using less internal space than a full-size graphics card.
- PCI Express x16 connection: Uses a PCIe x16 interface for installation in compatible desktop motherboards. Check the computer case dimensions, slot type, power capacity and operating-system compatibility before purchase.
What the HD 6850 specifications do—and do not—establish
AMD lists the Radeon HD 6850 as a Radeon HD 6000 Series product with up to 1 GB of GPU memory and DirectX 11 support on its product page. Those details identify the GPU family and capabilities; they do not establish that a particular Sapphire card is defective, compatible with every system, or supported by a specific PSU.
