PayPal announced on August 14, 2023, that Alex Chriss, then an Intuit executive, would become its President and CEO. The appointment took effect September 27, 2023, but Chriss is no longer PayPal’s CEO: he left the role on February 2, 2026, and Enrique Lores became CEO on March 1, 2026.
What PayPal announced in August 2023
PayPal said its board had selected Chriss after a CEO search that lasted several months. The company described its goal as finding a “next generation leader” with global payments, product, and technology experience who could drive growth across PayPal’s platform. PayPal said the appointment had unanimous support from the board and the search committee. PayPal’s August 14, 2023 announcement
John Donahoe, PayPal’s President and CEO and board chair at the time, said: “The Board is confident that Alex is the right leader to help PayPal capitalize on the opportunities ahead and drive significant value for our shareholders.” That was the board chair’s stated confidence in the appointment, not evidence on its own that the strategy later succeeded.
Chriss’s move from Intuit to PayPal
Chriss had been Intuit’s Executive Vice President and General Manager of its Small Business and Self-Employed Group since January 2019. PayPal said he was responsible for more than half of Intuit’s revenue; that figure is PayPal’s description of the group’s scope in its announcement, not an independently presented measurement.

Intuit announced that Chriss would leave the group leadership role effective September 5, 2023, with Marianna Tessel taking over. PayPal’s announcement said Chriss’s appointment as President and CEO would take effect September 27. The dates mark separate transitions: Chriss’s Intuit departure came first, followed by his start at PayPal. Intuit’s August 14, 2023 SEC filing and PayPal’s August 14, 2023 SEC filing
PayPal’s filing also described Chriss as leading an organization serving QuickBooks and Mailchimp users. His Intuit background therefore included leadership of products used by small businesses and self-employed customers, alongside the broader product and technology experience PayPal cited in its selection rationale.
