There is no single way to pay for gaming. A downloaded game may be a one-time purchase; a free-to-play title may invite repeated purchases through virtual currency; a valuable in-game item may be tradable; and a sports wager is a gambling transaction with different costs and rules. The safest way to assess any charge is to identify what you are buying, who processes the payment, when funds leave your account, and what recourse you have if something goes wrong.
How do gaming payments differ?
| Payment model | What the payment buys | Main thing to check |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront game or add-on | A game, expansion, or downloadable content through a storefront | The storefront’s price, refund terms, and account security |
| Free-to-play purchase | Virtual currency or an in-game item, often bought during play | The real-money cost after currency conversion, and whether the purchase recurs |
| Virtual asset transaction | An item or balance that may be usable, transferable, or tradable in a particular game economy | Whether transfer or cash-out is actually supported, and what happens if the account or asset is lost |
| Sports wagering | A wager placed through a gambling operator | Whether the card issuer treats it as a cash advance or cash equivalent |
| Buy now, pay later (BNPL) | Credit used to pay for an eligible purchase, if offered by the platform or merchant | Repayment schedule, fees, applicable local regulation, and the lender’s terms |
Payment options also vary by platform and region. A Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City briefing from April 2025 describes cards, digital wallets, BNPL services, and cash-based online payment methods among the options used by video-game platforms. Availability and terms can change, so check the payment screen and provider terms for your country rather than assuming a method is supported everywhere.

What happens when you buy a game or add-on?
For a paid game, expansion, or downloadable add-on, you typically pay through a console, PC, or mobile storefront. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City describes services such as Steam, Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store, and Nintendo eShop as storefronts that accept payments and pay game companies. This means the storefront’s payment and refund process may be central to resolving a problem, even though the publisher made the game.
Before confirming an order, check the final amount, currency, account that will receive the content, and the storefront’s refund terms. A payment method’s protections and dispute process can differ from the storefront’s refund policy; neither should be assumed to guarantee a refund in every situation.

How do in-game purchases and virtual currency work?
Follow the money through each step
A common free-to-play payment path is payment method → game or platform currency → in-game item or service. A player pays real money for currency and then spends that balance in the game. In other games, the player may buy an item directly. Free-to-play does not necessarily mean that everything in the game is free.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes a broader shift from single upfront purchases toward repeated in-game payments, including microtransactions. It also notes that publishers set the conversion rates for virtual currency and the prices of items. Bundled denominations can make it harder to see how much an item costs in real money: the player may have to buy more currency than the item requires, leaving a balance for later spending.
Check what the currency can—and cannot—do
Do not assume a virtual balance can be withdrawn, transferred to another player, or exchanged for cash. Those features depend on the specific game and its terms. In some markets, the CFPB has observed transfers or conversion of virtual assets; that does not establish that any particular game supports them, or that every item has a reliable cash value.

For a purchase, work out the real-money cost before confirming it. If the store shows only a virtual-currency price, check the currency bundle price and amount needed. Also look for whether the transaction is one-time or recurring and whether the balance expires or is subject to other restrictions in that game’s terms.
When does an in-game item become a financial risk?
Some game and virtual-world economies let people buy, sell, or trade assets. The CFPB’s 2024 report notes that services have emerged around these economies that resemble payment processing, money transmission, or lending. That observation does not mean every game operates like a bank or that an item can always be converted to money.
The same CFPB report identifies risks including phishing, account takeover, scams, privacy concerns, and limited recourse if assets are stolen or an account is closed. Treat valuable virtual items as exposed to platform and account risks, not as a bank deposit with guaranteed recovery. Use a unique password, enable available account-security measures, and be wary of messages asking you to sign in or transfer an item through an unfamiliar service.

To illustrate the scale of gaming spending—not the value of virtual assets—the CFPB cited U.S. consumer spending of $56.6 billion in 2022 on gaming, including hardware and content such as purchases and microtransactions. In its 2024 reporting, it also described nearly $57 billion in U.S. consumer gaming spending in 2023, including hardware, software, and in-game transactions. These are different annual figures and categories as reported by the agency, not a measure of current spending or cashable game balances.

That depends on the operator, card issuer, and jurisdiction. Even where a card payment is accepted, an issuer may classify an online gambling transaction as a cash advance or cash equivalent rather than an ordinary purchase. A cash advance may trigger a transaction fee and interest from the transaction date, even if you usually pay your card balance in full each month. Check your card agreement and ask the issuer how it will classify the transaction before placing a wager.
The CFPB’s 2024 review used information from specified issuers, Kansas and Ohio case studies, card agreements, and complaint analysis. It reported $717 million in fees on $3.6 billion in overall cash-advance volume in 2022, or about $1 in fees per $19 spent across the major issuers it examined. Those numbers describe cash advances overall, not sports bets alone. The CFPB also observed an association between sports-betting legalization and cash-advance fee incidence; that association by itself does not prove legalization caused every fee increase.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Is BNPL a way to finance a game purchase?
Some platforms or merchants may offer BNPL for eligible purchases, but availability and terms depend on the provider, merchant, and location. A payment split into installments is still credit: read the due dates and fee terms, and consider whether the payments fit your budget. Do not assume an interest-free offer has no consequences if a payment is missed.
United States: CFPB guidance changed in 2025
The CFPB says it withdrew several BNPL guidance documents, including its 2024 BNPL Interpretive Rule, on May 12, 2025. That withdrawn rule should not be described as current CFPB guidance. Its withdrawal does not establish that all other laws, regulations, or agency actions concerning BNPL no longer apply.

United Kingdom: specified deferred payment credit rules began in 2026
The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) defines deferred payment credit (DPC) in its PS26/1 policy statement as interest-free credit repayable in 12 or fewer instalments within 12 months or less. From 15 July 2026, FCA regulation applies to lenders offering DPC to finance merchant purchases under the rules described in that statement. The FCA distinguishes these products from other regulated BNPL agreements and says the change does not include merchants offering their own DPC directly. This is a UK-specific change, not a rule for all BNPL or gaming purchases worldwide.

The FCA reports that UK DPC lending grew from £0.06 billion in 2017 to more than £13 billion in 2024. That figure concerns DPC lending as a whole, not gaming purchases.

- Check the account’s payment settings. Review the console, computer, mobile-store, or game account for parental controls, spending limits, purchase approval, and options to block payments to gaming vendors. Exact controls depend on the platform and region.
- Avoid leaving a payment method available unnecessarily. The CFPB suggests considering a gift card with a finite balance instead of storing a debit or credit card on a child’s account. Check that the card works with the child’s platform and region, and read its redemption and balance terms. A finite balance limits the funds available through that card; it does not eliminate other spending routes or account risks.
- Protect purchases with account access controls. Use available passwords or purchase authentication, and do not share account credentials. Check whether a child can make purchases from another device or account linked to the same payment method.
- Turn on bank or card alerts. Transaction notifications can make spending easier to spot. Ask the bank or card issuer whether it offers alerts or a way to block payments to gaming vendors.
- Review the statement and purchase history. Compare charges with the platform’s order history so you can identify unfamiliar transactions and contact the relevant platform or payment provider promptly.
How should you compare payment methods?
Compare the full transaction, not just the button that completes it. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City notes that payment methods differ in settlement timing and in the rules used to resolve errors or fraud. A digital wallet, card, cash-based online payment, or BNPL provider can therefore produce different payment and dispute experiences. The method that is most convenient is not necessarily the one with the clearest recovery route.
- Total cost: Include conversion costs, transaction fees, interest, and any installment-related charges that apply.
- Timing: Find out when money is debited and whether interest can begin immediately.
- Price clarity: Convert virtual currency back to real money before deciding whether an item is worth its price.
- Disputes and refunds: Identify which provider handles an unauthorized transaction, a mistaken charge, or a refund request.
- Spending controls: Check for account limits, purchase approvals, alerts, and options to block a merchant or category.
- Asset flexibility: Verify whether an item can actually be transferred or converted to money; do not infer this from an advertised or player-reported value.
- Local rules: Confirm the rules that apply to your country, platform, payment provider, and product—especially for gambling or credit.
CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said, “As more banking and payments activity takes place in video games and virtual worlds, the CFPB is looking at ways to protect consumers from fraud and scams.” The statement accompanied the agency’s April 2024 report. It reflects the regulator’s concern about financial activity inside virtual environments; it does not mean that every game balance is a bank account or receives bank-account protections.
