Pavel Durov, Telegram’s founder and CEO, was detained in France on 24 August 2024 as part of a judicial investigation. He was placed under formal investigation and released under judicial supervision four days later; neither step was a finding of guilt. The separate claim that Apple would remove Telegram from the App Store and automatically delete it from iPhones was false at the time: neither Apple nor Telegram had announced a removal.

Why was Pavel Durov detained in France?

Durov was detained at Le Bourget airport outside Paris on 24 August 2024 in connection with a French judicial cybercrime investigation. On 27 August, Euronews reported that the Paris prosecutor’s office said the inquiry concerned 12 alleged offenses. The allegations included matters related to illicit transactions, child sexual abuse material, fraud, drug trafficking, and alleged failure to cooperate with lawful requests. They were allegations under investigation, not proven conduct or a conviction. Euronews reported the allegations on 27 August 2024.

What happened after the detention?

On 28 August 2024, Durov was placed under formal investigation and released under judicial supervision. Le Monde reported that the conditions included a €5 million bond, reporting to police twice a week, and a prohibition on leaving France at that time. Formal investigation is a procedural status, not a verdict. These are the conditions reported in August 2024; they should not be read as a statement of his current restrictions. Le Monde reported the release conditions on 29 August 2024.

Was Apple removing Telegram from the App Store?

No announcement supported that claim in August 2024. Full Fact rated the circulating claim false, reporting that neither Apple nor Telegram had said Telegram would be removed or automatically deleted from iPhones. The rumor combined two different actions: taking an app listing out of a store and deleting an app already installed on a device. The contemporaneous fact-check addressed the claim of an announced removal; it does not establish that Telegram is available in every country or remains listed today. Full Fact’s 30 August 2024 fact-check.

What did the French App Store show at the time?

On 26 August 2024, TechCrunch reported that Telegram ranked No. 1 in France’s App Store Social Networking category and No. 3 overall. That is evidence about the French storefront on that date, not a guarantee of availability in other regions or at a later date. Rankings and listings can change by country and over time. What is known about the case’s later status?

The available reporting here does not establish the case’s procedural status as of October 2026. The Associated Press reported in March 2025 that Durov had travelled from France to Dubai while France continued investigating. That report does not establish whether proceedings have since concluded or what restrictions, if any, apply now. The Associated Press report from March 2025.
