Monitoring password-reset activity helps a team spot suspicious recovery attempts and authentication failures—but only if the records are useful, protected, and reviewed. Log enough context to investigate events without recording reset tokens or other secrets, and make sure the reset page does not reveal whether an account exists.
Why should I monitor password reset requests?
Password recovery is part of authentication, so its successes and failures belong in security monitoring. OWASP recommends logging and reviewing authentication failures and enabling monitoring of authentication functions to help detect attacks and operational problems. OWASP Authentication Cheat Sheet
A reset-request record by itself is not a security control that proves the flow is safe. It becomes useful when the team can review it, identify suspicious patterns, and respond. OWASP guidance also calls for logging successful and unsuccessful authentication operations. OWASP ASVS 5.0 Security Events

What should I log when someone requests a password reset?
Structure records so an investigator can establish what happened, when, and with what outcome. OWASP’s logging guidance identifies fields such as timestamp, severity, security-event tags, account-holder identity, trace and span identifiers, outcome, and a concise event description as useful context. Assess each field for necessity and privacy impact; include request or network context only when it is appropriate for your service and policy. - PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Choose event names that describe the recovery flow
A practical taxonomy can distinguish events such as:
- Reset request received.
- Request rejected or throttled.
- Recovery verification failed.
- Password reset completed.
- Related administrative change made.
These are implementation examples, not a mandated OWASP event list. Use categories that match the steps and outcomes in your own recovery flow, so analysts can distinguish a request from a failed verification or a completed reset.

Keep credentials and unnecessary personal data out of logs
Do not log passwords, session identifiers, reset tokens, or other credentials. Treat a reset link or token as a secret even if it is short-lived: someone who obtains it may be able to use it. Restrict log access and protect integrity so records cannot be casually exposed or altered. Minimize personal data, and avoid copying sensitive request contents into free-text descriptions. Send relevant records from distributed application components to a protected central service, then analyze them and alert the people responsible when activity warrants prompt review. Collection without analysis or a response path is just storage. OWASP recommends centralizing logs, establishing monitoring and alerting, and considering attacks that evade simple lockout patterns—for example, attempts spread across multiple accounts or rotating IP addresses. - ✅ PROTECT ONLINE ACCOUNTS – A password manager, two-factor security key, and secure communication token in one, OnlyKey can keep your accounts safe even if your computer or a website is compromised. OnlyKey is open source, verified, and trustworthy.
- ✅ UNIVERSALLY SUPPORTED – Works with all websites including Twitter, Facebook, GitHub, and Google. Onlykey supports multiple methods of two-factor authentication including FIDO2 / U2F, Yubico OTP, TOTP, Challenge-response.
- ✅ PORTABLE PROTECTION – Extremely durable, waterproof, and tamper resistant design allows you to take your OnlyKey with you everywhere.
- ✅ PIN PROTECTION – Locking your device means that if this device is stolen, data remains secure, after 10 failed attempts to unlock all data is securely erased.
- ✅ EASY LOG IN – No need to remember multiple passwords because by plugging OnlyKey to your computer, it automatically inputs your username and password. It works with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, or Chromebook, just press a button to login securely!
Detection should look beyond a single account or address. Depending on the service, useful signals may include repeated requests for one account, bursts across many accounts, repeated verification failures, or patterns distributed across network sources. These are detection ideas to evaluate against your own traffic and threat model, not universal indicators of an attack.
Choose thresholds, retention, and alert urgency based on the service’s threat model, response capacity, privacy obligations, and applicable policy. The cited guidance does not set one threshold or retention period that fits every service.

Can a password reset page reveal whether an account exists?
Yes. If the response changes depending on whether the submitted address is registered, an attacker can use the page to enumerate accounts. OWASP recommends a generic response such as: “If that email address is in our database, we will send you an email to reset your password.” OWASP Authentication Cheat Sheet
Review the whole observable interaction, not just the message text. OWASP notes that differences in processing time can also disclose whether an account exists. Keep externally visible behavior consistent enough that an unauthenticated requester cannot reliably distinguish registered from unregistered addresses.
How should reset monitoring fit into the wider security process?
Define who reviews alerts, what evidence they need, and how suspected abuse is handled. Logging supports investigation; it does not replace secure recovery design, access controls, or an incident-response procedure. Where account changes or authentication events matter to users, an activity history or notification can also help them notice changes they did not make. OWASP Cornucopia Authentication (AT2)
