Passkeys can replace passwords for sign-in on services that support them, and they are designed to resist phishing. They are not yet a universal replacement: many sites, organizations, and account-recovery flows still rely on passwords. The likely direction is fewer passwords for everyday sign-in, not a guaranteed date when passwords disappear altogether.
How passkeys differ from passwords
Passwords are reusable secrets
A password is a secret you type into a website or app. If it is reused, stolen, or entered on a convincing fake site, an attacker may be able to use it elsewhere or take over the account. Unique passwords and multifactor authentication help, but passwords remain vulnerable to phishing and poor reuse habits.
Passkeys use cryptographic credentials
A passkey is a cryptographic credential associated with an account. In the usual public-key model, the service keeps a public key and verifies a cryptographic response from your authenticator; it does not receive a password that can be reused on another site. You approve sign-in locally with your device’s biometric, PIN, or pattern. The biometric unlocks the credential on the device rather than being sent to the service. FIDO describes its standards as using public-key cryptography for phishing-resistant authentication (FIDO Alliance passkey explainer).

Are passkeys safer than passwords?
For phishing and password reuse, passkeys offer a meaningful security improvement. They are tied to the legitimate service’s origin, so a lookalike site cannot simply ask you to type in the same reusable secret. This can also reduce dependence on phishable one-time codes.
“Phishing-resistant” does not mean “impossible to compromise.” A stolen or compromised device, a compromised credential-manager account, a weak recovery process, or social engineering can still put an account at risk. Passkeys work best alongside secure device access and a carefully protected recovery path.
Why adoption is growing, but passwords remain
FIDO Alliance estimated that 5 billion passkeys were in active use worldwide in 2026; this is an Alliance estimate, not a census of individual users (FIDO Alliance, May 7, 2026).

In an online survey conducted by Sapio Research in April 2026, 11,000 adults who regularly sign in to online services across 10 countries were asked about passkeys. FIDO Alliance reported that 90% were familiar with them, 75% had enabled one on at least one account, and 49% used passkeys regularly when available. These are survey estimates for the described sample, with a reported margin of error of ±0.9 percentage points at 95% confidence (FIDO Alliance, The State of Passkeys 2026).
Workplace adoption is advancing, but deployment is not the same as eliminating passwords. In a separate April 2026 survey of 1,400 authentication decision-makers at organizations with 500 or more employees in the same 10 countries, 68% said their organization had deployed, piloted, or was rolling out passkeys for employee sign-in. While 82% said fully passwordless authentication was an ultimate workforce goal, only 28% said they had achieved it; 57% still relied on phishable methods for employees’ primary day-to-day sign-in. These are FIDO Alliance/Sapio Research survey findings, with a reported margin of error of ±2.6 percentage points at 95% confidence (FIDO Alliance, The State of Passkeys 2026).
Organizations that had deployed passkeys reported greater security confidence (47%), faster employee logins (45%), fewer password-reset tickets (35%), and fewer phishing-related incidents (32%). These are reported organizational outcomes, not independent measurements proving that passkeys alone caused the changes.

Earlier consumer findings show why passwords remain frustrating as well as risky. In a 2025 FIDO Alliance survey of 1,389 people in the United States, United Kingdom, China, South Korea, and Japan, 36% said they had experienced at least one account compromise due to weak or stolen passwords, and 48% said they had abandoned an online purchase after forgetting a password. These self-reported figures apply to that survey’s sample and wording, not to all consumers worldwide (FIDO Alliance, April 30, 2025).
Synced and device-bound passkeys
Where a passkey is stored affects how you can use it on other devices and what happens when a device is lost. FIDO distinguishes between synced credentials and device-bound authenticators.
Synced passkeys
A synced passkey can be made available across your devices through the same provider account. Examples named by FIDO include iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, and third-party credential managers such as 1Password and Dashlane. This can ease a move to a new device, provided you can access the provider account and your devices and services support the arrangement.

Device-bound passkeys and security keys
A device-bound passkey stays with one authenticator, such as a particular phone or a FIDO security key. A hardware key can be useful when you want a separate physical authenticator or an organization requires a device-bound credential. If that authenticator is unavailable, you need another sign-in or recovery route.
You do not need to buy a security key just to use passkeys. Supported phones and computers can store them, and a phone may also approve sign-in on a nearby computer through a QR code and proximity verification. Check that a specific key works with your devices and the services you use before buying one.

The answer depends on where your passkey is stored and what backup or recovery options the service and credential provider support. A synced passkey may be available on another device after you regain access to the provider account. A device-bound passkey is not automatically present on a replacement phone, so you may need another registered authenticator or the service’s account-recovery process.

Before relying on a passkey for an important account, check its recovery options and register a backup sign-in method if offered. Keep access to the account that manages synced credentials protected; losing that access can affect the passkeys stored there.
Do you still need a password?
Often, yes—for now. A service may offer passkeys for primary sign-in while retaining passwords for older accounts, devices, or recovery. Some organizations are piloting or rolling out passkeys without having removed phishable sign-in methods. FIDO’s 2026 findings show widespread progress, but do not establish a universal end date for passwords or prove that every website and recovery flow has switched.
When a service offers a passkey, you can use it for that account’s sign-in while keeping any required fallback secure. Avoid weakening or deleting a recovery method unless the service clearly explains the consequences and provides another dependable route.
How to decide whether passkeys fit your needs
When comparing a passkey option with password-based sign-in, consider these practical questions:
- Phishing resistance: Does the sign-in use a passkey, or does it still depend on a password or a code that can be tricked from you?
- Service support: Do the websites and apps you rely on offer passkeys for the accounts that matter?
- Device compatibility: Can you use the passkey across your operating systems, browsers, and devices?
- Storage choice: Is it synced through a provider account, or bound to one device or security key?
- Loss and recovery: Can you get in if a phone or key is unavailable, and how is the provider account recovered?
- Organizational rollout: For employers, what implementation, training, and user-support work is needed? FIDO’s 2025 enterprise summary identifies complexity, costs, and limited implementation clarity as reasons some organizations may lack active projects (FIDO Alliance, February 26, 2025).
Passkeys are a strong candidate to replace passwords as the normal sign-in method wherever services and devices support them. Their adoption is substantial, but the remaining work includes service compatibility, organizational rollout, fallback methods, and account recovery. That is why “passkeys will kill passwords” is best understood as a direction for supported sign-in—not a promise that passwords vanish everywhere.
