A passenger arriving at Miami International Airport from Havana was reportedly found with 10 live birds concealed in six tubes sewn into his underwear, according to a CBS Miami report citing federal documents. The account describes allegations, not a finding of guilt; the report does not establish the case’s eventual court outcome.
What reportedly happened at Miami International Airport?
CBS Miami reported on October 6, 2026, that Alberto Hernandez Castillo arrived at Miami International Airport on October 4 aboard a World Atlantic flight from Havana. According to the news report’s account of federal documents, he was selected for secondary inspection and answered “No” when asked whether he was bringing animals or wildlife into the country. Officers reportedly noticed what the account described as an “unexplained bulge” near his waist and pelvis.
The report says a pat-down allegedly revealed six plastic tubes taped shut, with mesh near their openings, concealed in pockets sewn into his underwear. The tubes reportedly contained 10 live birds. CBS Miami said the passenger told officers the birds were for his “personal use” and then invoked his right to remain silent. It also reported that investigators noted missing wildlife declaration and clearance paperwork. These are details attributed to federal documents in the news account, not independent findings here. What birds did officers reportedly find?
The report identified the birds as eight yellow-faced grassquits and two blue grosbeaks. It does not establish their later condition or disposition.

Do you need a permit to bring birds into the United States?
It depends on the species and circumstances. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) says its federal Migratory Bird Import/Export permit authorizes import or export across the U.S. international boundary for covered birds, including live birds as well as listed specimens and parts. Coverage is not universal: the Migratory Bird Treaty Act applies to protected migratory bird species, and the applicable species list and rules matter. Declarations and ports of entry
USFWS says wildlife imports and exports are generally subject to its regulations and declaration requirements. Wildlife generally must enter or leave through designated U.S. ports unless an applicable designated-port exception permit applies. The agency also lists exceptions to declaration requirements, including certain situations involving personal accompanying baggage. Whether a permit, declaration, or exception applies depends on the specific wildlife and circumstances. USFWS guidance for wildlife importers and exporters
