Parveen Hooda won the women’s 65 kg boxing gold at the 2026 Asian Games, defeating Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien-chin 3–2 on a split decision. The victory marked a comeback after Hooda’s bronze from the delayed Hangzhou 2022 Games, held in 2023, was stripped following a whereabouts failure; the new gold is a separate achievement, not restoration of that medal.
How Parveen Hooda won the final
The Government of India’s official announcement confirmed Hooda’s gold in the women’s 65 kg final after what Prime Minister Narendra Modi described as a hard-fought bout. Hindustan Times reported that she beat Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei by a 3–2 split decision.
Hindustan Times’ account of the rounds said Hooda dominated the first, Chen took the second, and Hooda secured enough judges’ cards in the final round. The report also described a hug between the boxers after the bout as a gesture of mutual admiration; those details are the newspaper’s observations rather than an independently verified technical scoring breakdown.
Hindustan Times called Hooda the third Indian woman to win Asian Games boxing gold, after Mary Kom, who won in 2014, and Lovlina Borgohain, who won the 75 kg gold earlier on the same day as Hooda’s final.

Why this is a redemption story
Hooda had won bronze in the 57 kg category at the Hangzhou Asian Games, held in 2023 after a delay. Press Trust of India, in an interview syndicated by NDTV on 2 October 2026, reported that the medal was later stripped following a whereabouts failure. PTI also reported that Hooda served a 22-month suspension and missed the 2024 Olympics. The 2026 gold came in a different weight category and is a new medal.
Hooda told PTI that she felt mentally low after the whereabouts failure, then decided to resume training rather than risk regretting a failure to try. She described her return as a second journey in which she felt stronger and more mature. The contrast between the lost bronze and the new gold is part of the story, but it does not make the two results equivalent: they came in different Asian Games editions and weight classes, under different circumstances.

The medal she kept as motivation
In the PTI interview, Hooda said she kept the 2023 medal on a wall at home so she would see it and remember her ambition to change its colour. She said, “The medal (of 2023 Asian Games) has come back as gold,” referring to the new win as the outcome she had worked toward—not the return of the stripped bronze.

Hooda’s boxing background and next stated goal
The Boxing Federation of India profile lists Hooda’s hometown as Rurki village in Rohtak, Haryana, her birth date as 15 April 2000, and her style as orthodox. It says she once lacked the resources to buy gloves and credits a village academy, started in 2011, with opening a path into boxing. The profile lists her earlier achievements as 2019 South Asian Games gold, 2021 senior nationals gold, 2022 World Championships bronze and 2022 Asian Championships gold.
PTI reported that Hooda is an Assistant Sub-Inspector with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. In the same interview, she said she planned to spend time with family before preparing for the 2028 Olympics. That is her stated plan as of 2 October 2026, not a guarantee about her future schedule.
