A Particle Photon 2 can power a connected temperature and humidity monitor, but it does not measure temperature or humidity by itself. Add a separate digital sensor; Particle recommends an I2C device from Sensirion’s SHT3x family for this kind of Photon 2 use. The basic connection is straightforward, provided the sensor module’s I2C logic is compatible with the Photon 2’s 3.3 V bus.
What the Photon 2 does—and what the sensor does
The Photon 2 is the monitor’s controller and network interface. A separate sensor measures the air and sends digital readings to the board over I2C. Particle’s Photon 2 migration guide recommends an I2C temperature and humidity sensor such as the SHT3x.
This distinction matters when choosing parts: buying a Photon 2 alone does not provide temperature or humidity readings. For a maker build, an SHT3x-compatible breakout is generally more convenient to connect than a bare sensor IC, but breakout boards differ. Check the specific module’s documentation for supply voltage, logic levels, I2C pull-ups, and connector arrangement before wiring it.
Choose an SHT3x sensor module carefully
Sensirion’s SHT3x-DIS datasheet lists typical SHT35 accuracy of ±1.5 %RH for relative humidity and ±0.1 °C for temperature. These are component specifications, not a measurement of a complete Photon 2 monitor. The assembled device’s accuracy has not been established here.

- 1.Made of high-quality materials with precision processes, ensuring stable performance during 3D printing and reducing failure rate.
- 2.Designed to be compatible with popular 3D printers and open-source frameworks, easy to install and ready to use without complex calibration.
- 3.Optimized for high-frequency use, resistant to wear, high temperature or aging (depending on the part's environment), reducing replacement frequency.
- 4.As a replacement or supplement to existing systems, it improves surface finish, dimensional accuracy, or operational stability.
- 5.Meets basic safety standards for electronic/mechanical components, made of hazardous-substance-free materials, safe and worry-free during use.
Do not infer that a sensor module is safe to connect just because the sensor IC itself accepts a particular supply range. The module’s pull-up resistors and logic levels must also suit the Photon 2’s 3.3 V I2C bus. In particular, the Photon 2 I2C pins are not 5 V tolerant; do not connect a 5 V I2C bus directly to them. Consult both the module documentation and the Sensirion SHT3x-DIS datasheet when checking electrical compatibility.
Wire the sensor to the Photon 2
The Photon 2 has one I2C port. Its I2C data line is D0/SDA, and its clock line is D1/SCL. Particle specifies a 3.3 V bus, says it is not 5 V tolerant, and specifies support up to 400 kHz. Keep the bus within that limit even if a particular SHT3x sensor supports a higher I2C speed.

| Photon 2 connection | Connect to | Check before powering |
|---|---|---|
| D0 / SDA | Sensor module SDA | Module I2C logic and pull-ups must be compatible with 3.3 V. |
| D1 / SCL | Sensor module SCL | Keep the I2C bus at or below 400 kHz. |
| Power and ground | Module supply and ground connections | Follow the module’s documented supply requirements; do not assume every breakout uses the same voltage or connector. |
Particle’s Photon 2 datasheet describes the board’s I2C port and electrical limits. Confirm the labels and supply requirements on the specific breakout rather than relying on the sensor family name alone.

What connectivity makes possible
The Photon 2 supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 5, according to Particle’s Photon 2 product page. Those board-level capabilities give a project options for networked designs, but they do not define how this particular monitor reports or stores readings.

A dashboard, cloud destination, local log, graph, sampling interval, and alert behavior each depend on implementation choices. The hardware documentation cited here does not establish a ready-made monitoring service or a specific reporting workflow, so treat those features as parts of the project to design rather than automatic Photon 2 functions.

Particle specifies a Photon 2 operating range of −20 to +70 °C and up to 95% relative humidity, non-condensing. These are limits for the board, not the measurement range or accuracy of the SHT3x sensor. A monitor’s suitability for a particular environment also depends on the sensor module and how the assembly is deployed.
