Parrot’s 2026 plan for versions 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3 has played out—and the project announced Parrot OS 7.4 on October 3, 2026. The original roadmap paired those releases with exploratory work on AI security, but the release timeline changed: 7.2 and 7.3 arrived months ahead of their planned dates. Parrot’s AI roadmap described intentions, not proof that its planned MCPwn tool had shipped.
What the 2026 Parrot roadmap planned—and what happened
Parrot Security’s January 12, 2026 roadmap scheduled three releases: Parrot 7.1 for February, 7.2 for July, and 7.3 for November. The official announcements show a faster schedule for the latter two: 7.1 was released February 11, 7.2 on May 7, and 7.3 on June 29. Parrot’s homepage announced version 7.4 as available on October 3, after the 7.1–7.3 plan had already played out.
For the current version, the dated 7.4 announcement and homepage are more recent than the official download page captured on October 4, which still listed 7.3 as latest. That discrepancy means the download page may lag; check the dated release announcement before treating its listing as current.
What Parrot meant by a focus on AI security
The roadmap framed AI as a system to assess, not a trend to adopt for its own sake. Parrot said it would examine how AI systems break, misbehave, or are misused; prototype tools to expose weaknesses or risky behavior; and share market intelligence on changes to penetration testing. The post described this as exploratory work focused on learning before impact. As Parrot put it, “In 2026, Parrot’s focus isn’t to ‘jump on AI,’ but to understand it properly.”

The roadmap also announced a new AI tools category that would include MCPwn, described as focused on AI-powered offensive security research. That announcement establishes a plan, not the tool’s release status, detailed features, or maturity as of October 4, 2026. Readers should not assume MCPwn is a shipped or production-ready capability based on the roadmap alone.
What changed in Parrot 7.2 and 7.3
Parrot 7.2: infrastructure and security updates
The 7.2 announcement highlighted infrastructure, Docker container, and security-tool updates. It also named Linux kernel 6.19.13 and a patch for CVE-2026-31431, known as “Copy Fail.” Consult the official Parrot 7.2 release announcement for the project’s release details.

Parrot 7.3: system, usability, and image changes
The 7.3 notes emphasized system and usability work, smaller images, and removing tools considered unnecessary from the Home and Security editions. They also introduced an opt-in optimized package repository and official Vagrant boxes for Home and Security on amd64. Parrot claimed optimized builds could deliver 20% to 50% gains on compute-heavy work; that is the project’s claim, not an independently established benchmark. See the official Parrot 7.3 release announcement for its stated changes.
Which Parrot edition fits your use?
Choose an edition by intended work, hardware, included tools, and deployment style. Parrot describes Security as its penetration-testing edition, Home as suited to everyday use and development, HTB as tailored to CTF and Hack The Box training, and Raspberry Pi as an ARM option. Special editions target cloud/container or minimal-use cases.

| Edition | Stated use | Minimum RAM listed | Deployment or tool notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Security | Penetration testing | 4 GB; 8 GB recommended | Includes the parrot-tools-full metapackage. Listed formats include ISO, OVA, UTM, VMDK, QCOW2, and Vagrant. |
| Home | Daily use and development | 2 GB; 4 GB recommended | Includes everyday-use configurations; official Vagrant boxes for amd64 were announced with 7.3. |
| HTB | CTF and Hack The Box training | 4 GB; 8 GB recommended | Designed for those training workflows. |
| Raspberry Pi | ARM devices, including compact labs | 2 GB or more | Verify compatibility for the specific device and image. |
| Special | Cloud/container or minimal use | 1 GB or more | Choose based on the intended specialized deployment. |
These RAM figures and edition descriptions come from Parrot’s official download page. The project describes Parrot OS as free and open source. A Raspberry Pi can suit a portable lab, IoT security research, or ARM deployment, but the cited material does not establish a particular model as required.
How to choose and get the release
- Match the edition to the task. Pick Security when you need its penetration-testing tool set, Home for general use or development, HTB for CTF/Hack The Box workflows, or Raspberry Pi for compatible ARM hardware.
- Check the machine and memory. Compare the listed RAM requirements with your target system, then verify that the image supports the hardware you plan to use.
- Choose the deployment format. For Security, Parrot lists ISO for installation and several virtual-machine formats, plus Vagrant. Select the format that fits your bare-metal or virtualized setup.
- Verify the latest release before downloading. On October 3, 2026, Parrot announced 7.4, while the download page captured October 4 still showed 7.3 as latest. Use the dated release announcement to resolve that mismatch.
Why the 2026 roadmap matters to users
The roadmap is useful for understanding Parrot’s intended direction: alongside a quicker-than-planned sequence of system releases, the project said it would investigate AI systems as potential security targets and develop practical ways to examine risky behavior. It does not establish that every proposed AI tool or research effort became part of a release. For edition and download decisions, rely on the release notes and current download information rather than treating roadmap plans as shipped features.
