Parents can use a new photo taken at home as the starting point for an AI-generated school-style portrait, but that does not automatically make it cheaper than a school package. The real comparison includes prints, any paid AI access, time, privacy choices and whether a school’s class or group photos matter to the family. One viral example shows how the approach works; it does not establish how common it is or what families typically save.
How parents are making AI school-style portraits
Fast Company reported on September 29, 2026, that TikTok creator Carlie Bond photographed her three school-age children against a plain backdrop and asked ChatGPT, “Keep them exactly the same but make it look like a school picture.” The tool added a standard gradient background. Bond captioned the post, “So we took our own and let my good friend Chat help us out.” Fast Company’s report describes one example, not a measured trend.
The basic idea is straightforward: take a fresh portrait at home, then use an AI image tool to change the background or styling. Some commenters on Bond’s post said the AI changed the child’s appearance despite the instruction to keep it the same. That is an observation from commenters, not a controlled test of how reliably the tool preserves a child’s likeness.

What school photos may cost—and what the figures mean
There is no single price established by the cited reporting. Fast Company cited Capturely, a company that offers at-home digital photography sessions, as estimating in 2026 that families spend an average of $25–$60 on a print package, with photos of one child ranging from $15–$125. The article does not describe a sampling method, so these should be treated as Capturely’s broad company estimates, not representative national statistics. Fast Company

In a separate account published in December 2025, The Atlantic’s Annie Midori Atherton said packages she encountered ranged from $28 at the low end to more than $100 at the high end. She also noted that a single digital download in packages she had seen could cost $65 without physical prints. Those are prices one writer encountered, not a survey of school-photo prices across the industry. The Atlantic
Neither set of figures measures what a family would save by making an AI portrait. A fair comparison should count the items the family would actually buy, rather than treating the full package price as savings.

Compare the full trade-offs, not just the package price

For an at-home setup, start with a plain, uncluttered background, even lighting and a camera held at the child’s eye level. A portable backdrop is optional; a simple blank wall can also work as a starting point. Take several natural expressions before editing, then inspect the result closely for changes to facial features, hair, clothing or other details that should remain true to the original.
Protect a child’s image before uploading it
ChatGPT’s controls are specific to ChatGPT and may change. OpenAI says users can turn off “Improve the model for everyone”; new conversations after that setting is off are not used to train models, though they may remain in chat history. Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while temporary, but OpenAI says they may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Check the controls in your own account before uploading a child’s image, and do not assume these settings or retention terms apply to other AI services. OpenAI’s data-controls guidance

These controls describe particular uses and retention conditions; they are not a promise that an upload is never processed or that Temporary Chat is deleted immediately. Consider whether an identifiable child’s photo needs to be uploaded at all, and review the service’s current settings and terms first.
There is a broader reason to be thoughtful about identifiable images online, but it should not be confused with the risks of a private AI upload. Human Rights Watch reported on July 30, 2026, that Australia’s eSafety Commissioner received over 100 reports between January and March 2026 about anonymous accounts misusing images taken from official school websites and social accounts. HRW said some material involved AI-generated sexualized deepfakes, face swaps or other manipulation. This reporting concerns publicly available Australian school imagery; it does not show that a parent’s private upload has the same exposure or outcome. Human Rights Watch’s account

A new home photo is not the same as removing a watermark
Taking a new photo of your child and asking AI to change its background is different from uploading a school photographer’s watermarked proof and asking a tool to remove the watermark. Fast Company reported both behaviors, but a photographer’s proof is not interchangeable with a photo you took yourself. Do not treat removing a watermark as a harmless cost-saving shortcut.
OpenAI’s Terms of Use say users are responsible for submitted content and must have the rights, licenses and permissions needed to provide it. The terms also say that, as between the user and OpenAI and to the extent permitted by law, the user retains rights in input. Those statements do not settle the rights in every school portrait, proof or image of a child. For a specific proof, check the photographer’s purchase and usage terms or ask the rights holder.
