There is no universal parental-controls switch. The authorized way to set, adjust, or remove controls depends on the platform, device generation, and family-account role. First identify the device and whether you need a temporary exception, a change to a particular limit, or complete removal. Use the parent, guardian, or family organizer account; these instructions are not a guide to secretly defeating someone else’s settings.

Before changing parental controls, identify what you need

Check four things before opening settings: which device and operating-system generation is involved, which adult account manages the child’s family group, whether the change should affect one device or linked devices, and whether you want a temporary exception or lasting removal. The distinction matters: extending today’s allowance is not the same as disabling a recurring limit or removing supervision.

  • Temporary exception: Add time or turn off a limit for the current day where the platform supports it.
  • Change a recurring rule: Adjust a daily allowance, schedule, app restriction, or other setting.
  • Remove controls: Use the platform’s authorized removal process. Some systems require unlinking a device or app, not merely switching off a time limit.

Keep the relevant parent or organizer account available. Google explicitly requires a parent in the family group to use their Google Account password to set up or change a child’s parental-control settings (Google For Families Help).

Apple: manage Screen Time through Family Sharing

For a child in a Family Sharing group, the family organizer or a designated parent or guardian can manage restrictions using Screen Time. Apple’s exact screens and steps depend on the iOS or iPadOS version and the adult’s role in the family group.

  1. Sign in with the family organizer or designated parent/guardian account.
  2. Open Apple Support’s guidance for Screen Time and Family Sharing, then select the instructions that match the device’s iOS or iPadOS version and your family role.
  3. Choose the specific restriction to adjust if you want a limited change. For complete removal, follow Apple’s current instructions for the child’s device and family setup rather than assuming that switching off one Screen Time limit removes every restriction.

Apple’s support information identifies the authorized roles and Screen Time as the management path, but does not establish one removal sequence that applies to every device and family configuration. Start with Apple Support’s Family Sharing and parental-controls guidance.

Google: change supervised-device settings in Family Link

Family Link lets a parent manage supervised-device screen time, including daily limits and bedtime. Use the parent account in the family group to change the child’s settings; Google requires that parent’s Google Account password. For the current setup or removal flow, consult Google’s Family Link instructions, because the steps depend on the child’s supervision and device setup.

Changing a limit is different from ending supervision. The available guidance establishes the parent-authorized management requirement and screen-time features, but not a universal current removal sequence for every account and device. Do not treat a device-level setting as proof that account supervision has ended.

Microsoft: adjust Family Safety limits across connected devices

Microsoft Family Safety supports app and game limits that can be set by amount of time and schedule. Its guidance says limits can extend across Windows, Xbox, and Android devices connected through the Microsoft Family Safety app. This makes it important to select the right family member and platform before changing a rule.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: distinguish a daily exception from removal

Nintendo’s parental-controls system covers content and features as well as play time. On the original Switch, the linked parental-controls app can extend play time or turn off that day’s play limit. That temporary action does not itself remove parental controls. Nintendo’s support instructions say removal requires unlinking the app from the console.

What parental controls may not cover

Parental controls are not necessarily a complete barrier to accessing content. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner gives accessing a service through its website instead of its restricted app as an example of a possible gap (eSafety Commissioner, parental controls, published 2025). This is a general limitation, not a claim that every restriction can be avoided in the same way. Explain the rules with the child and check which devices, apps, and access routes the control actually covers.
