David Ellison announced on October 2, 2026, that the combined Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery company will be named Skydance. The name applies to the corporate parent; Paramount, Warner Bros. and the companies’ other brands are expected to remain visible. The merger is still pending, with closing anticipated for October 6, subject to customary conditions.
Why is the combined company called Skydance?
Axios reported that the name pays tribute to Skydance, the production company founded by David Ellison. Ellison said the new name gives the combined company “an identity of its own while allowing Paramount and Warner Bros. — and all our extraordinary brands — to remain in the spotlight.”

In the video posted by Ellison with the announcement, the brands are described as “more than a destination” and “the launch pad.” The video also says they “move through culture,” with each one “distinct, built on story, driven by technology.” The message presents Skydance as an umbrella identity, not a plan to erase the names audiences already know.
Is Paramount becoming Skydance?
Skydance is the announced name of the combined corporate parent, not a stated renaming of Paramount Pictures, Paramount+ or every other Paramount business. The companies have said their studios would be maintained, and the announcement describes Paramount and Warner Bros. as brands that will remain in the spotlight.

Axios reported that the planned ticker for the combined company is SKYD. That is a reported plan, not confirmation that a ticker change has taken effect. The final operating structure and ticker transition may be clarified in later filings or company announcements.
What businesses and brands are expected to come together?
The merger is intended to combine Paramount’s and Warner Bros. Discovery’s film and television studios, streaming services and linear television networks. The companies’ September 30 announcement named examples from both portfolios:
| Area | Named businesses and brands |
|---|---|
| Direct-to-consumer services | Paramount+, HBO Max and Pluto TV (referred to as Pluto in the transaction announcement) |
| Warner Bros. Discovery portfolio | Discovery Channel, CNN, DC, Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Games, New Line Cinema, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim |
| Paramount portfolio | Paramount Pictures, CBS, Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, Comedy Central, SHOWTIME, Paramount+, Pluto TV and Skydance units |
The brand lists show the breadth of the announced combination; they do not establish that every business will keep its current structure or that any service has already been integrated.

Will Paramount+ and HBO Max merge?
The transaction announcement identifies Paramount+, HBO Max and Pluto as direct-to-consumer businesses being brought together. It does not specify whether they will become one service, how subscriptions might be packaged, or whether their names or apps will change after closing. Those outcomes should not be treated as settled until the companies announce them.

Paramount Skydance Corporation and Warner Bros. Discovery signed a definitive merger agreement on February 27, 2026. Paramount agreed to pay $31 in cash per WBD share; the companies’ announcement put WBD’s enterprise value at $110 billion.
On September 30, the companies said they expected the merger to close on October 6, 2026, subject to customary closing conditions. Paramount Skydance’s October 1 Form 8-K repeated that anticipated date and the closing consideration formula. As of October 2, the deal had not yet closed, so Skydance is the announced future identity of the combined parent rather than a completed corporate change.
Other announced deal commitments
- Paramount Skydance’s transaction release said the companies expected more than $6 billion in synergies.
- The same release set a minimum of 30 theatrical films annually, with 15 from each studio.
These are terms and expectations described in the transaction release, not evidence that the merger has closed or that the commitments have already been delivered.
