Parallels Desktop 16.5 marked an important change: Parallels documented compatibility with Apple’s first M1 Macs. But it did not turn an M1 Mac into an ordinary x86 Windows PC. Windows ran as an Arm-based virtual machine, with emulation helping many Intel-written Windows applications run inside it. That distinction shaped what worked—and what did not.
This is a retrospective review of the 16.5 milestone, not a claim that 16.5 is current or the right version to install today. Microsoft’s current guidance names newer Parallels versions for Windows 11 on Apple silicon, and Windows 10 reached the end of support on October 14, 2025.
What Parallels Desktop 16.5 changed
Parallels’ support documentation says, “Parallels Desktop 16.5 and newer versions are fully compatible with Mac computers with Apple M1 chips.” That compatibility statement made 16.5 a milestone: an M1 Mac could host a Windows virtual machine using Parallels’ Apple-silicon virtualization engine.
The important qualification is that this was not conventional Intel Windows running directly on an Intel Mac. Apple silicon uses an Arm processor, so the virtual machine ran an Arm-based operating system. For Windows, that meant Windows on Arm—not a virtual copy of the x86 environment used by most traditional Windows PCs.

This article evaluates the release’s significance and documented constraints. It is not a hands-on performance test: the available official material does not establish benchmark results for version 16.5, so claims about speed or a particular app’s performance would be unsupported.
How Windows applications ran on an M1 Mac
Arm Windows, with emulation for many Intel apps
Parallels says its Apple-silicon engine uses hardware-assisted virtualization to run Arm-based virtual machines. In this setup, Windows 11 on Arm includes emulation for many x86 and x64 Windows applications. That can extend compatibility beyond software built specifically for Arm, but it is not a guarantee that every Windows program will work.

Compatibility depends on more than the application’s label. Drivers, connected devices, games, and software that depends on particular hardware or low-level system behavior may not work as expected. Microsoft specifically warns that some hardware, apps, and games can be affected, including software relying on DirectX 12. Check with the software and device makers about Arm support and virtual-machine compatibility before relying on a required workflow.
Architecture is not the same as a Windows license
Virtualization provides a place to run Windows; it does not automatically provide a Windows license. Microsoft’s current guidance says a separate Windows 11 Pro license is needed for each instance if the user does not already have one. Licensing terms can depend on edition and jurisdiction, so check the applicable Microsoft terms before buying or deploying Windows.

Where the Apple-silicon version had real limits
Parallels lists several features that are unavailable on Apple silicon. These are practical constraints, not just technical footnotes:
- No nested virtualization: a Windows VM cannot itself provide the virtualization layer needed by certain Windows features or workloads. Microsoft also identifies Windows features that depend on nested virtualization as unsupported in the described Parallels setup.
- No direct use of an Intel VM: an existing Intel-based virtual machine cannot simply be carried over and run on Apple silicon. The CPU architectures differ.
- Limited migration paths: Parallels lists importing virtual machines from VMware, VirtualBox, and Hyper-V, as well as transferring a PC into a VM, among the unsupported functions on Apple silicon.
For a move from an Intel Mac, Parallels’ stated route is to create a new Arm virtual machine and copy personal data into it. That may preserve documents and other files, but it is not the same as transferring an existing Intel VM with its operating system, apps, and configuration intact. If access to the old environment matters, retain a way to use that original Intel setup while deciding what can be replaced or migrated.

Is version 16.5 the version to install now?
No. Version 16.5 is historically significant, but it is not the current Parallels edition. Parallels’ live requirements and compatibility information is the appropriate place to check support for a particular Mac, macOS version, and Parallels release.

Windows 10 is not a sensible default for a new, normally supported installation: Microsoft says support ended October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.

For someone who needs Windows from an M-series Mac, the main choice is whether to run a local Arm VM or use a cloud-hosted Windows PC. These approaches solve different problems:

A local VM is the direct fit when local execution is important and the applications and devices have been checked for compatibility. Windows 365 is an alternative when a cloud-hosted Windows environment better fits the user’s access and administration needs. Neither option makes it safe to assume that a particular specialized app or peripheral will work; verify that exact combination first.

Verdict: an important milestone, not an x86 replacement
Parallels Desktop 16.5 brought Windows virtualization to the M1 era by making an Arm-based VM practical on Apple silicon. Its value was real for users whose Windows needs fit Windows on Arm and its emulation layer. The “sort of” matters because the result remained an Arm Windows environment with compatibility boundaries—not a conventional Intel Windows PC in Mac form. For a current Windows 11 setup, follow today’s Parallels and Microsoft compatibility guidance rather than treating 16.5 as an authorized current solution.
