PAPERHEAD is a single-player first-person shooter and adventure-horror game set in a cardboard world, with a planned Steam release on October 9, 2026—just ahead of Halloween. Its mix of cartoon-like visuals, fast movement, shotgun combat, and cartoonish gore explains the “Paper Mario got trapped in DOOM” comparison, though that is a shorthand, not an official description or connection to either franchise.
What is PAPERHEAD?
Developed by Paperhead te4m and published by HypeTrain Digital, PAPERHEAD combines what its Steam listing calls “a mix of a fast-paced movement boomer shooter and an adventure horror game.” The premise puts you in an abandoned research facility to explore and uncover a dark mystery in a world made of cardboard.

Steam Up: A Feast of Dim Sum by KTBG, Strategy Board Game | Buy on Amazon |
The contrast is the hook: the art direction is playful and papery, but the game is a first-person shooter, and the developers describe its mature content as “Cartoonish blood & gore.” The Steam page leans into that clash with the question, “WHY WOULD CARDBOARD… BLEED?”

How do the shooting and pencil mechanics work?
The announced combat includes a shotgun and other weapons, along with physical attacks: you can kick exploding barrels, toss enemies, and use boot attacks. A magical pencil is also central to play. The Steam listing says it can be used to draw objects such as bombs and doors, making it both a weapon and a way to change the environment.
#1 Best Overall
- Steam Up: A Feast of Dim Sum is a competitive 2-5 player light-medium weight Dim Sum set collection and action management game offering a delicious cultural experience.
- At the beginning of the game, steamers, filled with different types of Dim Sum, are stacked and placed on a Turntable.
- Each player takes turns performing 2 different actions each round. Actions include gaining and spending food tokens to purchase Dim Sum in Steamers within their Feast Zone.
- Players may also play Fortune cards to benefit themselves or affect their opponents. Starting the 2nd round, a Fate card is revealed each round to trigger an event that may affect all players.
- The game ends when a specific number of Steamers is purchased or the Fate deck is emptied. Final scoring is then calculated. The player with the most Hearty Points wins and leaves the table with the fullest stomach!
Those are features described on the store page, not hands-on findings. The listing suggests a blend of movement-focused combat and horror exploration, but it does not establish how the mechanics feel in play or how the game performs on particular PCs.
When does PAPERHEAD release on Steam?
Steam lists October 9, 2026 as the planned release date. Paperhead te4m’s developer announcements say the launch moved from September 18 to October 9 to allow more time for polish and fixes and to target a release window with a better chance to stand out. As of October 7, 2026, Steam still showed the game as not yet available; the date and availability can change.
What happened to the free prologue?
The developer announced that the free prologue, PAPERHEAD EP.0, would stop being available to claim when its Steam page closed on September 24, 2026. According to that announcement, people who had already added it to their libraries would retain it. That is the developer’s statement; account access has not been independently verified here.
What features, languages, and PC requirements are listed?
Steam lists single-player, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing. It lists 11 interface and subtitle languages: English, French, German, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Turkish. The listing does not say that these languages have full audio.
Steam’s listed system requirements are:
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 7 64-bit or later | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | 64-bit processor | 2.4 GHz quad-core processor or higher |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GeForce 9800GT or equivalent | GeForce GTX 460 or equivalent |
| DirectX | Version 9 | Version 11 |
| Storage | 2 GB available space | 3 GB available space |
These are the game’s published requirements, not a performance test. Steam separately notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later only; that client requirement is distinct from the game listing’s Windows 7 minimum.

The October 9 date puts PAPERHEAD close to Halloween, and its abandoned-facility mystery, adventure-horror framing, and cartoonish gore support a seasonal pitch. But the evidence establishes a release date and horror elements—not a Halloween story or a Halloween-specific event. The “made for Halloween” angle is best read as timing and tone, rather than a confirmed seasonal theme.
What is still unknown before launch?
At the October 7, 2026 snapshot, the Steam listing was pre-release and showed no user reviews. Price, launch reception, final availability, and actual hardware performance were not established in the official materials reviewed. There is also no basis here for claiming how the game plays beyond the mechanics announced on its store page.
