The Panasonic LUMIX ZS300 is a compact travel camera built around a useful pairing: a 1-type, 20.1-megapixel sensor and a 15x optical zoom lens covering 24–360mm equivalent in 3:2 format. Its retracting lens and 337 g weight with battery and SD card make it easier to carry than a camera-and-lens setup with comparable reach. The tradeoffs are a fixed rear screen, no viewfinder, and a lens that narrows from f/3.3 at the wide end to f/6.4 at telephoto.

What the Panasonic ZS300 is designed to do

The ZS300 is a fixed-lens compact camera for people who want one camera to cover wide travel scenes and distant details without changing lenses. Panasonic specifies a 1-type BSI CMOS sensor with 20.1 effective megapixels and a stabilized 15x optical zoom. That combination is the camera’s central proposition: more sensor area than many small-sensor travel zooms, with a broad built-in focal range.

Panasonic’s May 2026 announcement describes the sensor and zoom as delivering clear, detailed images in challenging lighting. That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not a guarantee of low-light results. The lens’s maximum aperture falls from f/3.3 to f/6.4 as it zooms in, which limits the light available at the long end.

How much zoom does the ZS300 have?

Its lens provides 15x optical zoom. Panasonic lists a 24–360mm equivalent range in 3:2 format; the equivalent range can vary with aspect ratio and recording mode. The lens retracts into the body when the camera is off, an advantage for travel carry.

  • No More Blur, Even at 60x Zoom: This point and shoot camera features POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), which effectively suppresses hand-shake vibration at the tele-end

Panasonic also documents up to 30x extended or extra optical zoom when using selected reduced picture sizes. That mode is not the same as the full-resolution 15x optical range. Digital zoom is another separate option and reduces image quality, so it should not be counted as equivalent optical reach.

Image quality, low light, and video

The 1-type BSI CMOS sensor and 20.1 effective megapixels give the ZS300 a larger sensor format than many compact cameras with very long zooms. RTINGS describes it as having a sensor advantage over the ZS99 and reports better RAW quality in its comparison. These are reviewer findings, not a promise that every scene or output will look better.

At the wide end, the maximum aperture is f/3.3; at the telephoto end, it is f/6.4. The narrower aperture at longer focal lengths can require brighter conditions, slower shutter speeds, or higher sensitivity, especially when photographing moving subjects. Panasonic specifies 5-axis Hybrid O.I.S.+ stabilization, but its specification footnote limits 5-axis compensation to video other than 4K recording.

TechRadar describes the ZS300/TZ300 as offering 4K video alongside 20 MP stills and the stabilized 24–360mm f/3.3–6.4 lens. Stabilization details matter when choosing a video mode: Panasonic’s stated 5-axis compensation does not apply to 4K recording.

Screen, viewfinder, and handling

The rear touchscreen is fixed, and the camera has no electronic viewfinder, according to RTINGS. This is a meaningful limitation if you prefer composing with an eye-level finder or regularly shoot from high or low angles where a tilting screen helps. The fixed screen also gives you fewer framing options than a flip-out or tilting display.

Panasonic lists a weight of 337 g with battery and SD memory card. RTINGS notes the compact carry and retracting lens as strengths for travel, while also reporting that the camera is not weather-sealed. Keep it protected from rain, dust, and other adverse conditions rather than treating it as a rugged camera.

Panasonic ZS300 vs. alternatives

The best choice depends on whether pocketable reach, viewing options, lens brightness, or system flexibility matters most. The comparisons below reflect RTINGS’ evaluations; they are not hands-on findings from this article.

Is the Panasonic ZS300 good for travel photography?

It is a plausible fit for travelers who value a compact all-in-one camera and want optical reach for distant landmarks, wildlife at a distance, or details across a street. The retracting lens and 337 g listed weight support that use, while the 24–360mm equivalent range covers a broad range of framing needs without a lens change.

It is a weaker match if your travel photography depends on an eye-level viewfinder, an articulated screen, weather sealing, bright telephoto shooting, or stronger moving-subject autofocus. Those needs point toward a different compact or a larger interchangeable-lens setup.

Is the ZS300 worth buying?

The ZS300 makes the most sense when its particular combination—compact carry, a 1-type sensor, and 15x optical zoom—is more important than framing flexibility or a bright long lens. Before buying, check the current price and stock in your country; launch-era prices and availability do not establish today’s deal. The North American name is ZS300, while TZ300 appears in other regional materials.
