A forward-deployed engineer (FDE) works closely with a customer to turn its specific technical needs into software that runs in the customer’s environment. The title is strongly associated with Palantir, which helped popularize the role and delivery model. But embedded engineering is older than the label—and whether a job is really an FDE role depends less on its name than on whether the engineer builds and owns production software.

What is a forward-deployed engineer?

A forward-deployed engineer is a software engineer embedded with a customer, often working across discovery, development, integration and rollout. The job can involve connecting data sources, building applications, clarifying loosely defined requirements, working with end users and explaining engineering trade-offs to business stakeholders. The defining question is whether the engineer helps deliver a working system in the customer’s environment, rather than stopping at a proposal or demonstration. The Forward Deployed’s role guide and Cognizant’s glossary describe this customer-embedded model.

What does a forward-deployed engineer do?

Discover the real problem

FDE work often starts with understanding how a customer’s people, data and systems actually operate. Requirements may be ambiguous, and the engineer may need to spend time with end users and stakeholders before deciding what to build.

Build and integrate software

The role can span application development, data integration and adapting systems to the customer’s permissions, workflows and infrastructure. A design recommendation or polished demo alone does not establish that someone is doing FDE work; the stronger indicator is implementation of software that the customer can use in production.

Deploy and stay accountable

Rollout is not necessarily the finish line. A useful distinction is whether the engineer remains involved as the system stabilizes, or hands the work off once it has been accepted. The title itself does not settle who owns ongoing maintenance, prioritization or support, so those responsibilities should be clarified in each role or engagement.

Is an FDE just a consultant, solutions architect or sales engineer?

These jobs can overlap in customer contact and technical problem-solving, so labels alone are unreliable. Consulting may focus on advice or a recommended approach; solutions architecture may center on system design; and sales engineering may support evaluation and pre-sale demonstrations. An FDE may do some of those things too, but production-code ownership is the practical dividing line: does the person build and ship software in the customer’s environment, and help it work there?

What to compare What to ask
Timing Is the work mainly pre-sale, post-sale, or both?
Deliverable Is success a demo or design, or production software?
Ownership after launch Who handles stabilization, maintenance and changes?
Knowledge transfer Can the customer operate and maintain the system after handoff?
Reuse Does customer-specific work improve a reusable product, or remain bespoke?

Cognizant’s overview also raises a related customer concern: dependence on a provider’s platform or team after deployment. That makes handoff and maintainability important questions, not administrative details.

Did Palantir invent forward-deployed engineering?

The evidence supports a narrower claim: Palantir is strongly associated with popularizing FDE as a named role and delivery model, with the title traced to the early 2010s by The Forward Deployed’s guide. It does not establish that Palantir invented every form of engineering work embedded with customers.

The Register’s October 3, 2026 search-result excerpt offers examples of the distinction between longstanding practice and newer terminology. SHI senior vice president Ryan Sheehan said, “I always laugh at the IT industry’s terms” and “We have been doing FDE for a long time.” The excerpt also reports that cloud-monitoring vendor DoIT had used FDEs since 2011 but adopted that name in the last quarter of 2025, renaming its Customer Reliability Engineering practice. These accounts point to a familiar industry pattern: work can predate the label used to describe it.

Why is the FDE label prominent in the AI era?

Enterprise systems—including AI applications—must fit each customer’s data, workflows, permissions, legacy infrastructure and operational constraints. Embedded engineers can help bridge the gap between a general product and a customer’s specific environment. That makes the model relevant to some deployments, but it does not mean every organization needs an FDE or that a new title guarantees substantial engineering work.

How to evaluate an FDE job

For candidates, ask for concrete examples of what the team ships and what happens after launch. Useful questions include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What share of the work involves writing, reviewing and maintaining production code?
  • How much travel or on-site work is expected?
  • Who sets priorities when a customer request conflicts with the product roadmap?
  • What does ownership include after deployment, and where does it end at handoff?
  • How are customer-specific implementations documented and transferred?

No single employer’s current terms are established here, so candidates should verify the actual responsibilities and travel expectations for the specific position.

How customers should assess an FDE engagement

Customers should agree on what counts as a successful deployment, who will maintain the resulting system, and what knowledge will be transferred before a vendor team leaves. They should also establish whether custom work can be supported independently, whether it depends on a particular provider platform, and how customer-specific features relate to the product used by other customers. An FDE model is most meaningful when responsibility for a production outcome is clear—not merely when a vendor assigns a new title to customer-facing work.
