Palantir CEO Alex Karp is associated with the purchase of roughly 15,000 hectares of forest near Storsjö in Sweden’s Berg Municipality. The buyer, Cladonia Skog AB, bought the property from forestry company SCA for a reported SEK 235–240 million. Cladonia says it plans careful, long-term forest management; the purchaser has called speculation about a data center baseless.
What was bought, and by whom?
Cladonia Skog AB acquired the forest property near Storsjö in the Härjedalen area of Berg Municipality. SVT and Fortune report an area of about 15,000 hectares, or roughly 37,000 acres. SVT says that is comparable in area to Malmö Municipality and equals 2.6% of Berg Municipality.
The reported sale price differs slightly by outlet: SVT put it at SEK 240 million, while Fortune reported SEK 235 million. Both figures are reported transaction amounts, not a separately verified valuation. SVT’s report and Fortune’s report identify SCA as the seller and Cladonia as the buyer.
What approvals have been reported?
SVT reported that the purchase contract required both a permit under Sweden’s land acquisition law and a review under the country’s foreign direct investment screening law. The county administrative board granted the land acquisition permit on September 9, 2026. The separate foreign-investment process was less clear: the Inspectorate of Strategic Products (ISP) declined to confirm to SVT whether it had received the matter, citing confidentiality. SVT’s account therefore does not establish that this review was completed.

The land acquisition permit concerns a transaction between two legal persons, Cladonia and SCA. SVT quoted Anna Orestig, a land-acquisition-law expert at the Swedish Board of Agriculture, explaining that the law has two main aims: “to maintain the balance of land ownership between natural and legal persons, but also to promote employment or residence in sparsely populated areas.” SVT reported that the authority found the transfer would not affect the ownership balance and assessed that employment and residence would not be harmed.
What does the buyer say it will do with the forest?
Cladonia has described its approach as long-term and careful. In a statement carried by Sveriges Radio, the company said its ambition was “careful forestry that takes account of plant and animal life.” These are the buyer’s stated intentions, not confirmation that a full management plan has been adopted or implemented.

Logging and forest composition
Cladonia told SVT it did not plan to log the property that winter and was preparing a new forestry plan with local forestry advisers. Its stated long-term ambition is to gradually replace non-native lodgepole pine, also known as contorta, with native pine, spruce, birch, and rowan, while leaving naturally grown forest untouched.

SVT also reported that local businesses were working on repairs to existing cabins and roads, as well as clearing brush and gravel roads. That is reported site work; it does not mean the longer-term forest plans have already been carried out.

Will public access, reindeer grazing, and local recreation continue?
In a statement reproduced by SVT, Cladonia said public access rights (allemansrätten), reindeer grazing rights, the county board’s bird-protection decision, recorded utility and neighbor-access easements, and agreements with local snowmobile clubs and the fishing-area association would continue. These are the owner’s stated commitments regarding existing rights and agreements.
Hunting arrangements were not settled in the report. Cladonia said it understood the importance of local hunting, would keep some hunting rights, and intended to arrange rights for local hunters. It said the details would be determined after review and dialogue, so the report does not establish exactly who will be able to hunt where or under what terms.

Why did Karp buy the property, and is a data center planned?
SVT attributed the reported reason for the purchase to a person close to Karp, who said Karp’s love of skiing and remote places lay behind the decision. SVT also reported that Karp already had a cabin in the Swedish mountains. This explanation is attributed to that source rather than confirmed directly by Karp.
The purchaser described claims that a data center would be built on the land as “baseless.” The reporting does not establish a data-center plan.
