Pakistan’s National Library of Pakistan has launched “Beyond the Syllabus,” a lecture series intended to supplement Central Superior Services (CSS) exam preparation with practical perspectives from experienced professionals and senior officials. The first session took place on 1 October 2026 and focused on Pakistan’s culture, society and public service.

What is the “Beyond the Syllabus” lecture series?

The National Heritage and Culture Division launched the series at the National Library of Pakistan for students preparing for Pakistan’s CSS examinations. Its stated purpose is to add practical perspectives to candidates’ academic preparation, with sessions involving experienced professionals and senior officials, including people from the civil service and judiciary. The Government of Pakistan Press Information Department announcement of 1 October 2026 describes the initiative and its launch.

The first session was titled “Knowing Pakistan: Culture, Society and the Making of an Effective Civil Servant.” Federal Secretary Asad Rahman Gillani delivered the lecture after Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi inaugurated the series.

What did the inaugural lecture cover?

Gillani’s lecture addressed Pakistan’s cultural and social landscape, the evolution of its civil services, and qualities associated with effective public service. According to the official announcement, he emphasized critical thinking, sound judgment, and decisions grounded in reason and logic. He also discussed inherited administrative structures, institutional challenges, and demands that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence may bring to public administration.

The launch included an interactive question-and-answer session. The announcement does not report evidence about the lecture’s effect on candidates’ exam performance.

How can CSS candidates use the series?

The series is presented as a supplement, not a replacement for exam study. Its practical perspective may help candidates connect academic preparation with questions about public institutions, administration and service. The National Library also says it offers physical books and digital resources to support competitive-exam preparation, which candidates can use alongside lectures.

The launch announcement does not specify dates for future sessions, how to register, whether attendance is restricted, or whether there is a fee. Candidates should confirm those details with the National Library or the National Heritage and Culture Division before making plans.
