Pakistan’s Jinnah-1 is planned to travel to the Moon aboard China’s Chang’e-8 mission, but its launch year is not settled in the public information: SUPARCO’s program page still lists 2028, while reports of the agency’s August 2026 naming announcement give 2029. The rover is intended to explore the lunar south pole.
When is Jinnah-1 expected to launch?
The public schedule is inconsistent. SUPARCO’s Lunar Rover Program page labels the launch as 2028 and says Chang’e-8 is set for that year. However, the Associated Press of Pakistan report and Dawn’s August 13, 2026 report on Jinnah-1’s naming say the rover is scheduled to launch in 2029, with Dawn attributing that timing to SUPARCO.
The available statements do not establish whether 2029 reflects a formal schedule revision or whether the program page has not been updated. Treat 2028 as the year still shown on SUPARCO’s program page and 2029 as the later schedule reported in connection with the naming announcement—not as a confirmed launch date.

What is Jinnah-1, and where is it going?
Jinnah-1 is SUPARCO’s first named indigenous lunar rover. It is planned as part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission, which SUPARCO associates with the broader International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) project. SUPARCO identifies the lunar south pole as the rover’s intended landing region.

SUPARCO describes the rover as weighing approximately 35 kilograms. That is an agency-reported specification; the available sources do not independently verify it. They also do not provide a detailed instrument list, dimensions, operating lifetime, mobility range, power budget or communications architecture.
What will the rover study?
The stated objectives are plans, not results from a mission that has flown. SUPARCO says the rover is intended to study lunar soil, map the surface and test technologies relevant to future lunar and planetary exploration and a sustainable human presence. Coverage of the August 2026 naming announcement also names lunar plasma and radiation studies among the planned work.

- Plasma and radiation: Investigate the lunar environment, as described in the naming-announcement coverage.
- Technology: Test capabilities intended to support future exploration and human presence.
The sources do not identify specific instruments or explain how long the rover is expected to operate.

SUPARCO announced the name in August 2026 after a nationwide contest. Dawn reported 4,000 proposals, with seven entrants independently suggesting “Jinnah-1.” Seventeen-year-old Tayyab Karim Khan of Bahawalnagar was selected as the winner through balloting.

At the naming ceremony, SUPARCO chairman Muhammad Yousaf Khan said, as quoted by APP: “Jinnah-1 was not merely a name but a symbol of resilience, determination and the pursuit of progress demonstrated by the founder of Pakistan.”

Jinnah-1 is a planned surface rover. It is distinct from iCube-Qamar, the earlier spacecraft SUPARCO describes as Pakistan’s first lunar exploration effort. Developed with Pakistan’s Institute of Space Technology and China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University, iCube-Qamar launched from Hainan, China, aboard Chang’e-6 on May 3, 2024. SUPARCO says the orbiter carries two optical cameras.

The missions therefore represent different roles: iCube-Qamar is an orbiter, while Jinnah-1 is intended to conduct surface work on the Moon as part of Chang’e-8.
