Pakistan’s PTA scheduled a 5G spectrum auction for 10 March 2026, and operators later received authorization to begin phased service. The auction has now taken place: 480 MHz was sold to Jazz, Ufone and Zong. That marks progress toward commercial 5G, not nationwide availability; whether you can use it depends on your location, network readiness and phone.
What was the PTA 5G mock auction?
The title refers to a pre-auction mock auction, but the available parliamentary account does not independently confirm that exercise or provide its date or format. What it does establish is the formal auction timetable: on 26 February 2026, a National Assembly committee was told that PTA had scheduled the spectrum auction for 10 March. Jazz, Ufone and Zong had submitted advance participation fees, and the framework required each participating bidder to acquire at least 100 MHz. The committee was also told that initial service would roll out in selected cities, alongside tower-fiberization improvements. National Assembly committee briefing
Because that briefing predates the auction, it should be read as a schedule and plan—not as evidence that the mock auction itself happened or that commercial service was already available.

The allocation stage determined how much spectrum each operator acquired. A later assignment stage finalized the specific frequency positions. The auction gave the three operators spectrum for building 5G networks; it did not itself switch on service or guarantee coverage in any particular place.
| Operator | Spectrum allocated |
|---|---|
| Jazz | 190 MHz |
| Ufone | 180 MHz |
| Zong | 110 MHz |

When did 5G service begin in Pakistan?
On 20 March 2026, PTA authorized Jazz, Ufone and Zong to begin offering 5G in phases, Radio Pakistan reported. Authorization allowed operators to start service; it was not a declaration that all three networks had launched everywhere in Pakistan. Radio Pakistan’s report on PTA authorization
The rollout was described as beginning in selected locations. In a separate forecast on 12 March, IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja said full services would likely be available in federal and provincial capitals within six to eight months. That was a projection made at the time, not confirmation that the target was subsequently met. Ministry of IT and Telecommunication report

Will 5G work where you live, and will your phone connect?
Not automatically. PTA said: “Service availability may vary depending on location, network readiness, and device compatibility.” Its announcement advised consumers to check coverage information and handset compatibility lists published by operators. Radio Pakistan’s report on PTA guidance
- Check your location: Look up coverage for your exact area with the operator you plan to use. Authorization to launch is not the same as coverage at your home, workplace or travel destination.
- Check the exact phone model: A general “5G” label does not establish compatibility with a particular Pakistani operator’s network. Consult that operator’s current handset list before buying or relying on a device.
- Check network readiness: Availability can depend on an operator’s rollout and local network readiness, even where spectrum has been allocated.
Complete October 2026 coverage maps and a single, universally compatible handset list are not established here. Operator coverage and supported-device information can change, so rely on the current information published by the operator you intend to use.

What the auction means for consumers
Pakistan has moved from the spectrum-allocation stage to an authorized, phased rollout by Jazz, Ufone and Zong. The practical question is no longer simply whether the country has auctioned 5G spectrum; it is whether a specific operator has deployed service in your area and supports your exact phone model. Check those two details before choosing a network or buying a 5G handset.
