Pakistan’s Ministry of Planning, Development & Special Initiatives (MoPDSI) launched URAAN AI Techathon 1.0 in Islamabad on 18 August 2025. The national AI competition invited students, professionals, researchers, startups and innovators to develop AI-driven solutions for real-world challenges. Its official program described 12 thematic areas and a process spanning submissions, technical evaluation, finalist presentations, and planned mentorship and incubation for winners.

What was URAAN AI Techathon 1.0?

Announced under the URAAN Pakistan initiative, Techathon 1.0 was presented by MoPDSI as a way to mobilize young people and professionals to apply artificial intelligence to practical problems, strengthen Pakistan’s AI and machine-learning capacity, and increase the country’s participation in emerging technologies. The Ministry’s announcement describes the objectives, not measured economic impact or confirmed participant outcomes. MoPDSI launch announcement.

Radio Pakistan reported Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal saying: “Pakistan will not be a spectator in AI revolution; we will be driver, shapers and contributors to the global AI economy.” Radio Pakistan’s launch report.

What problems did the competition address?

The official Indus AI Week overview describes 12 thematic areas aligned with the National AI Task Force framework. Its examples include healthcare, agriculture, fintech, governance and climate. These are examples of the competition’s scope, not a complete list of the individual problem statements. The count of 12 describes program design; it is not a participation or impact result. Official Techathon 1.0 overview.

Who could participate?

The overview welcomed students, professionals, researchers, startups and innovators working on AI-driven solutions. It does not establish every eligibility rule for the first edition in the material available here, so age limits, nationality requirements, team-size limits or student-membership rules should not be assumed.

Participants could propose a solution to a defined sub-problem or submit an existing project or startup aligned with the thematic areas, according to the official overview.

How did the Techathon process work?

  1. Submit an idea or project. Teams submitted a solution to a defined sub-problem or an existing, relevant project or startup.
  2. Undergo technical evaluation. The overview says submissions were evaluated technically. Shortlisted teams would be contacted for source code and supporting materials.
  3. Present as a finalist. Shortlisted teams were to present before judges and a technical evaluation committee at a final event in Islamabad. The listed judging dimensions included innovation, feasibility, scalability and impact.
  4. Access planned winner support. The program described mentorship and incubation for winners, as well as possible commercialization opportunities, cloud resources and technical support.

These stages and benefits are described in the official Techathon 1.0 overview. They establish the announced program structure, not that every listed support item was ultimately delivered. The overview described incubation of up to six months as tentative; it does not verify that all winning teams completed that period.

What is the status of the later Techathon 2.0?

Techathon 2.0 is a separate, later edition; its eligibility, rules, schedule and prizes should not be applied retroactively to the 2025 launch. The official URAAN Pakistan 2.0 FAQ lists registration from 14 August through 14 September 2026, screening and shortlisting from 15 September to 14 October, notifications from 15 October to 6 November, and a National Techathon Day in Islamabad on 7 November 2026 marked tentative.

As of 5 October 2026, the FAQ’s registration period had ended and screening was underway. The listed event date is tentative, so check the FAQ for any changes before relying on it.

What is known about Techathon 1.0’s results?

The official launch and program pages establish the announced aims, thematic scope and planned process, but provide no source-verifiable participation total, outcome statistic or measured economic impact for the first edition. The program’s stated ambitions should therefore be distinguished from demonstrated results.
