India’s Air Chief Marshal A P Singh called reports of Pakistan-China cooperation on a fifth-generation fighter a concern, but said it was not a “no-go situation” for India. His central point: an aircraft’s impact depends not just on the platform, but on how effectively it is integrated with other military capabilities. The reported acquisition remains unconfirmed in the sources available here.
What did the IAF Chief say?
At a press conference ahead of India’s Air Force Day on October 3, 2026, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal A P Singh addressed reports that Pakistan may acquire a fifth-generation fighter with Chinese cooperation. Hindustan Times reported him as saying:
“Reports suggest that Pakistan may acquire them in the near future. There are even reports that their pilots are already undergoing training in China. Undoubtedly, this is a cause for concern. However, is it a no-go situation? I wouldn’t agree with that,” he said.

He also stressed that a fighter’s effectiveness depends on how well it is integrated with other military capabilities, not just on the aircraft itself. India Today’s same-day report similarly described his emphasis on integration. These are reports of Singh’s remarks, not an independent assessment of how either air force would perform in a conflict.

Is Pakistan getting a Chinese fifth-generation fighter?
The status is unsettled in the sources cited here. The October 3, 2026 Hindustan Times report characterizes Pakistan’s cooperation and possible acquisition as reported, rather than confirmed. Earlier coverage often named the J-35A, but the available sources do not establish that Pakistan has selected or acquired that variant, or confirm the reported pilot training independently.
On June 27, 2025, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif denied that a deal for J-35A fighters had been signed, while the Economic Times described earlier media and defence-source claims about a possible purchase and pilot training. That was a dated denial; it does not establish the arrangement’s status in October 2026. The sources do not settle whether a deal was later signed, which aircraft might be involved, how many, or when delivery could occur.
Why does integration matter?
Singh’s argument is that a fighter should not be judged in isolation. Its value depends in part on how it works with the wider military system. The press-conference reporting identifies integration with other military capabilities as the issue he highlighted; it does not provide enough verified technical detail to compare either side’s aircraft, sensors, weapons, command systems, or combat effectiveness.

That distinction also helps explain why a report of a possible aircraft acquisition is not the same as evidence of an operational capability. A platform’s reported status, its eventual delivery and its integration into a broader force are separate questions.
What did Singh say India should do?
Singh called for faster induction of a fifth-generation aircraft and progress on the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, while leaving room for alternatives if AMCA is delayed. Hindustan Times reported his words as:
“We must prioritise the early induction of an aircraft of this generation. We need to push the AMCA program forward; if there are delays, we must make alternative decisions,” he also added.

The Press Information Bureau’s December 29, 2025 release describes an approved AMCA execution model under which eligible Indian companies from the public and private sectors may bid independently or as joint ventures or consortia. That establishes a framework for execution, not a production schedule or date for operational induction.
How do the other reported procurement figures fit?
Hindustan Times also reported Singh’s comments on aircraft requirements and procurement proposals. They describe needs and processes, not completed purchases:
