Crews at the Paducah Site in Kentucky have segmented the first fissile converter from the C-337 Process Building, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reported on October 6, 2026. The planned C-337 campaign covers close to 500 converters. The often-cited pace of up to two converters a day belongs to a different, completed campaign in the neighboring C-333 building—not to C-337.

What happened at C-337

DOE says workers removed, cut and downsized the first fissile converter from C-337. That is what “segmentation” means in this project. The agency describes each converter as nearly twice the size of a standard cement-mixer drum. It has not published a C-337 converter’s weight or a more detailed equipment specification. DOE’s October 6, 2026 milestone report says close to 500 fissile converters are slated for removal and segmentation there.

The assignment’s description of C-337 as a 2.1-million-square-foot building is not corroborated by that DOE report, which describes facilities at the site as more than 1 million square feet. The available report does not establish the precise 2.1-million-square-foot figure.

Why the C-333 rate is not a C-337 schedule

The “two a day” result comes from C-333, a separate process building where DOE reported completion of a 497-converter campaign in February 2026. DOE said improvements took segmentation from roughly 14 days per converter during startup to as many as two converters daily. Those figures describe the C-333 campaign and do not set a target for C-337.

Project detail C-333 campaign C-337 campaign
Equipment classification Nonfissile converters, according to DOE Fissile converters, according to DOE
Reported scope 497 converters completed Close to 500 planned; no exact count stated
Reported pace From roughly 14 days per converter during startup to as many as two per day No daily target or rate stated
Completion timing DOE reported the campaign complete in February 2026 No projected finish date stated
Additional controls DOE’s reports describe the C-337 fissile work as requiring greater complexity than the C-333 work Enhanced monitoring, strict containment and specialized safety measures

DOE says handling C-337’s fissile components brings greater complexity than handling the nonfissile equipment in C-333. The agency has not explained in these reports why the converters received different classifications. The comparison therefore shows that C-333 provided process experience, not that the same rate or schedule will apply to C-337. DOE’s C-333 completion report details the earlier campaign.

What added controls DOE identifies

DOE says work on the C-337 fissile components requires enhanced monitoring, strict containment, specialized measures to prevent accidental reactions, and highly trained workers. The agency also reports that controls take mass, volume and geometry into account. These are safety considerations DOE identifies for the work; the reviewed announcements do not publish C-337 converter mass, fissile-material inventory, radiation levels or a quantified risk estimate.

To prepare the workforce, Paducah employees developed C-337 training drawing on more than 300 years of combined experience, according to DOE. Portsmouth Site personnel also shared expertise. The combined-experience figure describes the workforce knowledge drawn on for training, not a measured duration of work on one converter. DOE’s June 2, 2026 report on the training effort provides that account.

How the earlier campaign informs the cleanup

C-333’s completed work offers evidence that crews improved their methods over time. DOE says tools and procedures, knowledge-sharing with the Portsmouth Site, custom dust-collection systems and equipment to compact converter contents supported that campaign. Some contents from C-333 converters weighing upward of 70,000 pounds were reclaimed, compacted and stored onsite for possible reuse. That weight applies to C-333 equipment; DOE has not reported a comparable weight for C-337 converters.

Other Paducah tank figures should not be confused with converter specifications. A 2024 DOE report described 42 C-333 process storage tanks as 40 feet long and 8 feet in diameter, with a combined capacity of 86,000 cubic feet. These are storage tanks in C-333, not the C-337 converters now being segmented. The 2024 report on the C-333 storage tanks gives those measurements.

Where C-337 fits in Paducah’s cleanup

C-337 is the second of four former uranium-enrichment facilities undergoing deactivation at Paducah and the first there slated for demolition. Four Rivers Nuclear Partnership is the site’s deactivation and remediation contractor. DOE describes the C-337 work as part of its Decision 2029 holistic cleanup strategy. Deactivation is intended to prepare the facility for eventual demolition and support future reindustrialization and economic development; DOE’s October 2026 milestone announcement gives no completion timeline.

For context, DOE says C-333 enriched uranium for national security and defense and later for nuclear power. It ceased operations in 2013 and transitioned to deactivation. C-333’s history explains why the earlier building is part of the same site cleanup, but its equipment figures and segmentation rate should not be transferred to C-337.

What remains unknown

  • DOE gives no exact count for the C-337 converters; it describes the planned scope as close to 500.
  • No C-337 converter weight, daily segmentation target or projected completion date is stated in the reviewed milestone reports.
  • The DOE reports do not explain why C-337 converters are classified as fissile while the C-333 converters are described as nonfissile.
