The Padres planned to start left-hander Robbie Ray in Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, October 3, 2026, according to a CBS Sports report published October 2. The announcement described a pregame plan, not a confirmed start or game result.
Why Robbie Ray was the reported Game 1 choice
San Diego had started Michael King and Nick Pivetta in its two-game Wild Card Series win over the Chicago Cubs. With those two pitchers having worked in that series, Ray was the rotation-sequence choice for the NLDS opener, CBS Sports reported, crediting RotoWire. The report did not provide a broader managerial explanation or assess other candidates.
CBS Sports’ October 2 report said the Padres would start Ray against Milwaukee on October 3. Because it was published before the game, it establishes the planned assignment only; it does not establish who ultimately took the mound.

Ray’s Padres stretch and full-season numbers
Ray’s reported numbers after joining San Diego at the trade deadline were less favorable than his season-wide line: he posted a 5.02 ERA and a 33:27 strikeout-to-walk line over 43 innings in nine Padres starts. Those figures describe only his post-trade Padres sample.

For context, CBS Sports’ live player page listed Ray’s overall 2026 regular-season record as 13-8, with a 3.59 ERA, 140 strikeouts and 84 walks over 165.7 innings. That is a different sample from his nine-start Padres stretch, not a conflicting version of the same statistics. The figures are as listed on the CBS Sports page, not an official MLB statistical record.
