PacketHop raised a further $10 million in its third financing round, announced on August 7, 2005. GF Private Equity Group led the round, joined by existing investors US Venture Partners, Mayfield and ComVentures. The funding supported a company developing software that let Wi-Fi devices form mobile mesh networks, including where wireless access points were unavailable.

Who funded PacketHop’s $10 million round?

Fierce Network reported that GF Private Equity Group led PacketHop’s $10 million third-round financing, with earlier investors US Venture Partners, Mayfield and ComVentures participating. The announcement was dated August 7, 2005. Fierce Network’s 2005 report identified it as the company’s third round.

The financing followed a $10 million Series B led by ComVentures, reported by Converge Digest on August 9, 2004. Dealroom’s company profile lists an earlier Series A of $3.9 million in June 2003, as well as the two later $10 million rounds. Dealroom is a secondary company database, so its chronology is best read alongside the contemporaneous financing reports. Converge Digest’s 2004 Series B report and Dealroom’s PacketHop profile provide those details.

What PacketHop’s mobile mesh software did

PacketHop’s PacketHop Communication System software enabled 802.11 Wi-Fi devices to form autonomous mobile mesh networks. Fierce Network said the networks could operate with or without wireless access points. In practical terms, participating devices could relay communications, extending connectivity beyond a single access point and allowing a network to function without fixed wireless infrastructure.

Which markets was PacketHop targeting?

PacketHop initially targeted homeland security, according to the 2004 Converge Digest report. By 2005, Fierce Network described its potential markets more broadly as enterprises, government organizations and consumers. The change reflects the range of audiences cited in the contemporary reports; neither report establishes how much business the company ultimately won in each market.

What happened to PacketHop after the raise?

Dealroom lists PacketHop as acquired and says it merged into The Comtek Group in July 2007. The database describes the company as a Redwood City-based business launched in 2003, focused on mobile mesh networking, broadband communications and server-less applications. It also names Michael Howse as president and CEO. These company-history details come from Dealroom, rather than a contemporaneous transaction announcement in the other cited coverage.
