No—not reliably from a registry alone. Package registries publish useful clues, but they do not offer a common, authoritative answer to whether a dependency is abandoned. Some expose explicit maintainer signals; others show metadata that can help you investigate. A quiet release history is a reason to look closer, not proof that support has ended.

What can a package registry tell you?

It depends on the ecosystem and on what the registry actually surfaces. Publication dates, repository links, maintainer details, and status fields can help you find evidence, but a field’s presence does not guarantee that the registry interprets it as a health verdict.

Ecosystem What the registry documentation establishes What it does not establish
npm The npm Registry API documentation describes package metadata, including publication dates and links such as the source repository. npm search can weight maintenance alongside quality and popularity. The documentation does not define search maintenance weighting as an authoritative abandoned/not-abandoned classification. Search position is a discovery signal, not a support verdict.
PyPI PyPI Help defines an archived project as one no longer receiving updates. A maintainer can use archive status to indicate that future updates should not be expected. Archive status describes maintainer intent; it does not independently assess whether the package is safe or suitable for your application.
Cargo / crates.io The Cargo manifest reference describes a maintenance field with statuses including actively-developed, passively-maintained, as-is, looking-for-maintainer, and deprecated. Cargo says the field “may be used by a registry, but is currently not used by crates.io.” A manifest status therefore does not mean crates.io is using it to classify or filter packages.

These examples show why there is no dependable cross-registry answer: the available signals and their meaning vary. This comparison covers npm, PyPI, and Cargo documentation; it is not an exhaustive audit of every major registry.

Is this dependency abandoned?

Start by separating stated intent from observed activity. A maintainer-selected archive or deprecation signal is evidence of intent. A long gap between releases is only evidence that releases have been quiet. A project may be stable and complete, may receive support without frequent releases, or may have lost active support; release dates alone cannot distinguish those cases.

Archived

PyPI Help states: “An archived project is a project that is no longer receiving any updates.” On PyPI, an archived project remains publicly visible and resolvable by default, cannot publish new releases, and is omitted from PyPI search results. The archive applies to the project, not just one version.

Deprecated

Deprecation communicates that a package or release is discouraged, but its implementation and meaning can differ by ecosystem. Cargo lists deprecated as one possible maintenance status, while its reference also says crates.io currently does not use that field. Do not assume that a deprecation label has identical consequences in every registry.

Yanked

On PyPI, yanking concerns a particular release, not the project’s overall maintenance state. A yanked release is normally ignored by an installer unless it is the only release matching an exact version requirement. It is not interchangeable with archiving the project.

Quiet

No recent release is an observation, not an announcement. Treat it as a prompt to inspect the repository, maintainer communications, and the dependency’s role in your application rather than as a standalone abandonment test.

How do I know if a package is still maintained?

Use a short evidence review rather than a single date or badge. The registry can help you locate the package’s source and status; the decision comes from combining that information with what maintainers are doing and what your software needs.

  1. Confirm the exact package and ecosystem. Check the registry’s own metadata and read its definition of any status field. Do not assume fields with similar names have the same meaning across npm, PyPI, Cargo, or another registry.
  2. Look for explicit maintainer intent. Check for an archive, deprecation notice, or a maintainer announcement, and read its stated reason and scope. Treat an explicit signal as stronger evidence of intended support than release silence, but do not infer consequences beyond what the registry or maintainer says.
  3. Follow the source-repository link. Review code changes, issue and pull-request responses, release notes, security advisories, and maintainer announcements. A repository link or maintainer field helps you find those sources; it does not prove that the project is healthy.
  4. Judge the risk in context. Ask whether continued maintenance matters for this dependency’s function and exposure in your application. Compare candidates on support evidence, security response, compatibility with your runtime, migration effort, and the maturity of alternatives. If the evidence is inconclusive, record that rather than turning it into a yes-or-no claim.
  5. Save the evidence and check date. Registry metadata, repository activity, and project decisions can change. Revisit the assessment when the dependency’s role or risk changes.

A third-party explorer such as Is It Dead Yet? can help discover package activity trends, release and license history, incident reports, and alternatives across ecosystems. Treat it as a starting point, not registry authority, and verify its picture against the package’s own sources.

Why isn’t there one universal abandonment signal?

Registries differ in what they let maintainers declare, what they display, and how status affects package discovery or installation. A 2021 study, “Deprecation of Packages and Releases in Software Ecosystems: A Case Study on npm”, reported that four of the seven other package managers it examined—CPAN, Maven, PyPI, and RubyGems—did not implement a deprecation mechanism at the time of the study. It also described variation in whether systems displayed status in their interface, allowed maintainers to explain a rationale, or suggested a replacement.

That is historical evidence about the systems and period the authors examined, not a current feature checklist or a count of all package registries. It reinforces the practical point: a status label’s absence, presence, or consequences have to be interpreted in the context of that registry.
