P.J. Washington is being considered for a starting spot with the Dallas Mavericks in 2026–27, but he has not been named a starter. Head coach Dusty May cited Washington’s ability to play multiple positions, and the team had not settled on a starting five in the October 2, 2026 training-camp report.
What the Mavericks have said about Washington’s role
May said Washington is “certainly in the mix for a starting spot, mostly because he can play multiple positions.” That puts Washington among the candidates; it is not a lineup announcement. The same report said May did not expect the team to settle on its starting five soon.
Washington’s flexibility gives May options with the frontcourt. “If you want to play a small lineup, you can play the five. He can play the three for the bigger lineup,” May said. Washington described his own contributions as guarding perimeter players and bigs, screening, handling the ball in pick-and-roll, and taking advantage of mismatches.

Washington has usually started when available in Dallas. Grant Afseth’s October 2, 2026 report for the Dallas Sports Journal says Washington started 137 of the 142 regular-season games he played for the Mavericks after the team acquired him from Charlotte in February 2024. CBS Sports’ October 1, 2026 RotoWire report describes a different sample: four bench appearances in 113 Dallas regular-season appearances over the previous two years. Those figures use different windows and descriptions, so they should not be combined.

Washington’s recent production
The Dallas Sports Journal report gives these regular-season numbers. They provide context for his recent play, not a forecast or confirmation of his role.
| Season | Games | Points per game | Rebounds per game | Assists per game | Three-point shooting |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025–26 | 56 | 14.2 | 7.0 | 1.8 | 32.5% (76 of 234) |
| 2024–25 | not stated in the cited report | 14.7 | 7.8 | 2.3 | 38.1% (91 of 239) |
The decline in his three-point percentage between those seasons is one factor a coach could weigh when choosing lineups, but the cited report does not identify it as the reason for any decision. It also notes Washington missed time in both seasons; that history does not establish a current injury.

What could affect the starting decision
- Lineup fit: May’s comments point to Washington’s ability to cover small-ball center or small forward, depending on the size and balance of the group.
- Frontcourt competition: CBS Sports/RotoWire reported that rookie Morez Johnson’s addition could complicate the frontcourt picture. The report does not say Johnson has displaced Washington or won a starting role.
- Availability and performance: Recent shooting and availability may matter in lineup choices, but the reports do not establish a specific threshold or outcome.
- Coach’s priorities: May has described Washington’s physicality, defensive understanding, instincts, and ability to punish mismatches as useful qualities.
These are considerations, not a definitive head-to-head contest or a prediction. No opening-night starting five or season total of starts is established in the cited coverage.

Washington said, “For me, my biggest thing is winning. Whether I’m starting or not, I just want to win.” He added that he believes he can make an impact either way. May made a similar distinction between a title and a role, saying, “Or if I could finish a game versus have my name called and start a lineup, I’d rather finish the game as well.”

What Mavericks fans should take from the camp update
Washington is a credible candidate, given his starting history in Dallas and the positional flexibility May identified. But the training-camp comments stop short of confirming him in the first five. The October 2 report is a camp snapshot, and a later lineup announcement could change the picture.
