People taking GLP-1 medicines have reported brittle nails and slower nail growth, but current guidance links those changes to significant weight loss—not to a proven direct effect of Ozempic. Hair loss has stronger documentation: it appears in updated U.S. Ozempic labeling, while WEGOVY trial data report hair loss associated with weight reduction. Neither point establishes that every case is caused directly by the medicine.
Can Ozempic make your nails brittle?
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) lists brittle nails and slower nail growth among changes people have reported after starting GLP-1 medicines. Its guidance connects these nail changes with significant weight loss. That is a possible explanation, not proof that Ozempic directly damages nails.
The reviewed sources do not provide a clinical incidence estimate for nail changes. Hair-loss figures should not be used to estimate how often nail trouble occurs.

How nail reports differ from the evidence on hair loss
Hair loss has more formal documentation than nail changes. The FDA reports that the Adverse Reactions section of U.S. Ozempic labeling was updated to include alopecia between December 2024 and May 2025. A labeling update records a recognized adverse reaction; it does not prove that the drug directly caused every person’s hair loss.
U.S. WEGOVY prescribing information reports hair loss in weight-reduction trials and associates those adverse reactions with weight reduction. WEGOVY and Ozempic both contain semaglutide, but they have different indications and trial populations. These WEGOVY results are not Ozempic-specific rates.

FDA information on Ozempic labeling updates
What the WEGOVY trial figures do—and do not—show
In pooled U.S. weight-reduction studies of WEGOVY 2.4 mg injection, 3.3% of adults reported hair loss, compared with 1% receiving placebo. The current U.S. prescribing information also reports hair loss in 4% of female and 0.9% of male WEGOVY recipients, compared with 2% of females and 0% of males receiving placebo. These are trial figures for WEGOVY, not estimates for Ozempic or nail changes.
The prescribing information associates hair loss with weight reduction. It does not establish one mechanism for every patient or show that semaglutide directly caused each report.

Significant weight loss can coincide with changes in hair and nail growth. The AAD says reduced food intake may leave some people short of protein, vitamins, or other nutrients. It also notes that a direct effect of GLP-1 medicines on hair is possible, but the reason is not settled: “Researchers need more information to say for sure why people taking weight loss drugs experience hair loss.”

That uncertainty matters when interpreting symptoms. A report after starting treatment establishes timing, not cause. For nails in particular, the AAD guidance points to significant weight loss, and the reviewed sources do not establish a direct drug effect.

What to do if you notice hair loss or nail changes
- Discuss hair loss with a dermatologist or prescribing clinician. The AAD recommends working with a dermatologist to identify the type of hair loss and discuss GLP-1 treatment and monitoring.
- Review eating and nutrition with a clinician. If appetite or food intake has fallen substantially, ask whether your diet is meeting your needs rather than assuming a supplement will correct the problem.
- Do not stop or change a prescribed GLP-1 medicine on your own. Talk with the prescriber about symptoms and treatment options.
- Treat supplement advice cautiously. The AAD offers general guidance to take a standard multivitamin while using a GLP-1, but the evidence cited here does not show that multivitamins or nail-care products prevent or treat these hair or nail changes. Ask your clinician what is appropriate for you.
