OxygenOS 11.0.8.1 was announced on June 15, 2022—not in a current rollout. It is an Android 11 maintenance update for the OnePlus 7, 7 Pro, 7T and 7T Pro, adding improved system stability and the May 2022 Android security patch. It is not Android 12 or OxygenOS 12.1.
Its Android 12 significance was procedural: OnePlus listed OxygenOS 11.0.7.1 or 11.0.8.1 as an eligible starting version for OxygenOS 12 Open Beta 1, announced on June 30, 2022. Choose firmware by exact model and regional branch; the four phones do not share interchangeable packages.
Which phones and regional builds are covered?
OnePlus used separate firmware identifiers for the 7/7 Pro family and the 7T/7T Pro family. The suffix is part of the compatibility check, not cosmetic text.

What changed in OxygenOS 11.0.8.1?
- Improved system stability.
- Updated the Android security patch to May 2022.
That is the complete official changelog. It does not document Android 12, a new Android 12 interface, or a major feature release. Camera, File Manager, phone and thermal changes attributed to this version by some download pages are not part of the official build-specific changelog; treat them as earlier or broader firmware claims. A third-party package overview is available at Android Sage, but mirror availability and filenames can change.
Is this Android 12 or OxygenOS 12.1?
No. OxygenOS 11.0.8.1 remains an Android 11 build. OnePlus announced OxygenOS 12 Open Beta 1, based on Android 12, on June 30, 2022. For the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro, the initial beta instructions accepted OxygenOS 11.0.7.1 or 11.0.8.1 as the starting version. The official announcement calls it “OxygenOS 12 Open Beta”; it does not establish that 11.0.8.1 was an OxygenOS 12.1 release.

Why might the update not appear?
OnePlus described the June 2022 release as an incremental, staged rollout. A limited percentage of devices received it first while OnePlus checked for critical problems, with wider distribution afterward. The rollout was randomly limited rather than simply divided by geography, so a VPN might not make the OTA appear.
- Check the built-in updater manually and wait if no offer is shown.
- Do not install another region’s ZIP merely because it is available sooner.
- Carrier-branded, modified or rooted phones may follow different update paths.
How to choose a download package
Before downloading, record the phone’s exact model and current build under its software-information screen. Match all of the following:
- The exact device: 7, 7 Pro, 7T or 7T Pro.
- The regional branch, such as the
BAEuropean suffix orAAbranch listed for North America and India. - The package type and required starting build. Incremental OTAs are smaller and normally target a specified previous version; a full OTA is larger and can be useful when the phone is on an older compatible build or an incremental installation has failed.
- Any carrier restriction. Standard 7 Pro packages should not be assumed compatible with 7 Pro 5G carrier variants; the contemporaneous package listing marked some 5G models unsupported.
Use the phone’s own updater whenever it offers the correct build. If you obtain a ZIP manually, use an official OnePlus announcement or a reputable mirror and verify that the filename identifies your model and branch. A package described as incremental for a different starting build is not interchangeable.
Install through the normal OTA updater
- Open Settings.
- Open System and select System updates.
- Check for updates and inspect the displayed build before accepting it.
- Back up important data, connect to reliable Wi-Fi and keep the battery well charged.
- Download and install, then allow the phone to reboot without interruption.
Menu labels can differ between OxygenOS revisions. An OTA that has not arrived on the announcement date is not evidence that the phone is ineligible; staged distribution may simply not have reached it.

- At least 4 GB of free storage.
- A complete backup before changing software.
- The correct ROM ZIP copied to internal storage.
- Copy the verified ZIP to the phone’s internal storage.
- Open Settings → System → System Update.
- Open the top-right menu and choose Local install.
- Select the ZIP and confirm the installation.
- Wait for completion and restart only when prompted.
Later OxygenOS versions may place the local-install control elsewhere, including under Settings → About device → Version. If verification fails, stop: the usual causes are a wrong model or region, a damaged download, or an incompatible starting build. Re-download the matching package and use the built-in updater instead of forcing it.

Open Beta 1 was test software, not a stable Android 12 upgrade. OnePlus listed these issues for the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro:
- Double-tap-to-wake could fail.
- The phone could lag or be silent after reboot.
- An unexpected clock widget could appear.
- The Always-On Display clock could not be disabled.
- Reset could fail after downgrading to OxygenOS 11.
- The clock could become smaller after changing screen resolution.

Rolling back to Android 11 could erase all contents and remove some applications, so treat rollback as a data-loss operation, not a routine undo. Safety checks and failure cases
- Wrong device or suffix: Do not cross-flash GM and HD families or European and non-European branches.
- Missing OTA: Staged distribution may delay delivery; a VPN is not a reliable bypass.
- Missing Local install: Menu placement varies; confirm that the phone is on a supported stable branch and use the normal updater if available.
- Rooted, modified or custom-recovery phone: Follow instructions specifically covering that configuration; standard OTA assumptions may not apply.
- Beta instability: Return only with the official rollback package and a verified backup, accepting that the rollback can wipe data.
The Bottom Line
OxygenOS 11.0.8.1 is a historical Android 11 stability and security update, not OxygenOS 12. Install it only when the build matches the exact phone and region. Its main Android 12 role was serving as one of the eligible starting versions for the June 30, 2022 Open Beta; Android 12 arrived later through separate OxygenOS 12 releases.
