Yes—you can repurpose the built-in on-screen display (OSD) in some inexpensive composite-video monitors to show custom graphics over the camera image. Ogrinz Labs’ project uses an ESP32 over I2C to control the OSD in AMT630A-based LCD monitor boards; it does not unlock the chip’s embedded 8052 firmware. Whether it works on a particular monitor depends on its board, wiring and stock firmware behavior.
Why put custom graphics on a reversing-camera monitor?
The project began with a visibility problem inside a Robbie the Robot suit: the wearer was too tall to see through the mouth grille. A camera and small reversing-camera monitor gave the wearer a view. The monitor’s built-in OSD offered another possibility: put navigation information over the live camera image rather than add a separate display. Hackaday described the project on October 3, 2026, as an ESP32-and-I2C system for controlling that OSD.
The key is the monitor’s OSD hardware. Hackaday identifies the chip as an AMT630A, which includes video-switching hardware, an OSD graphics system and an 8052 microcontroller core. The project communicates with the OSD over I2C; it does not claim to take control of or unlock the 8052 firmware.

- Five independently positioned OSD windows.
- Text and custom glyphs.
- 16-color, 4-bit-per-pixel bitmaps, with palette animation.
- Opacity and blending, scaling, blinking regions and window movement.
- A Python converter that turns image files into Arduino bitmap data.
The repository documents Font RAM as 4096 16-bit words, or 8192 bytes. That is a project-documented implementation detail, not a general measure of monitor capability.
What to check before connecting an ESP32
The library documentation gives GPIO 21 for SDA and GPIO 22 for SCL as ESP32 defaults. Treat these as example pins, not proof that a monitor exposes compatible I2C connections. The repository warns: “AMT630A products are not all guaranteed to use the same firmware, panel timing, keypad circuit, or exposed I2C connections.”

- Two Mounting Options: Eyoyo bnc monitor offers two mounting options: one for desktop installation and the other for a 100x100mm VESA mount (not included). Whether you're using it as a security monitor in a surveillance setup, for daily tasks in the office, or as part of a home theater system, the flexibility of these mounting options ensures it fits seamlessly into your environment.
Before wiring a candidate monitor, identify its board and verify the accessible I2C pads, voltage levels, power requirements and keypad arrangement. Connect the monitor and ESP32 grounds. An ESP32 development board is a plausible controller for reproducing the documented setup, but the project does not endorse a particular model; confirm its logic levels and the monitor board’s electrical requirements first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why external control can freeze the display
On the monitor tested by the project, the stock firmware periodically accessed internal video and decoder registers and expected MCU ownership. Repeatedly taking external I2C ownership while that firmware was running eventually froze the entire display pipeline—not only the OSD, but also the live composite video.

- monitor for security cameras
For that particular three-button monitor, entering a hidden factory menu before sustained external OSD activity prevented the reported contention during long-duration testing. This behavior is specific to the tested firmware and is not a universal fix. The library’s standard initialization does not automatically enter the menu.
The repository also describes an optional automation circuit: three channels of a 74HC4066 switch across the Menu, plus and minus button contacts on the tested board. That circuit is for automating the factory-menu steps; it is not a requirement for basic OSD control.

What this project does—and does not—establish
This is a project for AMT630A-based monitor boards, not a method for making any arbitrary composite monitor programmable. The original monitor’s manufacturer and model are not identified, and the repository does not claim compatibility across all AMT630A products. It documents a working approach on particular hardware, while leaving each board’s exposed connections, electrical compatibility and stock-firmware interactions to be checked.
For a monitor you already own, useful questions are whether it contains an AMT630A, whether you can safely access its I2C connections, what voltage levels it uses, and whether live composite video continues to work during external OSD control. The project’s results do not establish those answers for other models.
