OWC’s Envoy Ultra is a bus-powered portable SSD designed for Thunderbolt 5. OWC rates it at up to 6,000 MB/s sequential read and write, but that is a maximum result from a specified test system—not a guaranteed speed for every computer, cable, capacity or workload.
What OWC announced
OWC announced the Envoy Ultra on September 12, 2024, describing it as the company’s first Thunderbolt 5 drive. The announcement opened preorders and projected shipping for October 2024; that schedule is historical and should not be treated as a current delivery estimate.
OWC positioned the drive for Mac and PC workflows and described it as bus-powered, so it is intended to draw power through the host connection rather than requiring a separate power brick. In a launch blog post, OWC called it “a bus-powered external SSD capable of speeds over 6,000 MB/s.”
How fast is the Envoy Ultra?
The current product-page wording is “Up to 6000MB/s sequential read/write (max)”. OWC’s test used a 2.0TB Envoy Ultra with an OWC Aura Pro IV, connected to a Windows 11 PC with an Intel Core i9-14900HX processor and 32GB of 5600MHz RAM. The test used AJA System Test at 4K-Full resolution with a 64GB file, 16-bit RGB codec and a single-file test.
#1 Best Overall
- Ultra-Fast: Over 6000MB/s...up to 2x faster than Thunderbolt 4 and USB4
- Ultra Maximizer: Gets the most speed possible from Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, and USB4 machines
- Ultra Ready: Easily handle daily data needs to pro level creative projects while matching internal storage performance
- Ultra Compatible: Works with Macs, PCs, iPad Pros, Chromebooks, and Surface devices
- Rugged and Shock Resitant; Weatherproof: Protects data from dust, drops, and downpours
That qualification matters. The figure is OWC’s maximum sequential result in that configuration. It does not establish that every Envoy Ultra capacity, host computer, connection or mixed workload will reach 6,000 MB/s, nor does it describe sustained performance during a long transfer. No independent benchmark confirming sustained throughput, thermal behavior or durability is established here.
What the number means in practice
- Sequential transfers: Large, contiguous files are the workload most closely represented by the published test.
- Host limits: The computer, port generation, cable and operating system can reduce throughput.
- Real workloads: Many small files, simultaneous tasks and software overhead can produce lower speeds than a maximum sequential result.
Compatibility: do you need Thunderbolt 5?
No. OWC lists Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 (with an asterisk in the launch announcement) and USB4 connections. OWC’s current compatibility statement says PCs, Chromebooks and Surface devices require a Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5 or USB4 port.

Check the exact interface on your computer before buying. USB-C describes the connector shape, not the performance level, so an ordinary USB-C port should not be assumed to provide full speed or guaranteed compatibility. Even with a supported interface, maximum throughput depends on the host and connection.
Compatibility checklist
- Identify whether the port is Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 or USB4, rather than relying on the USB-C shape alone.
- Confirm that your computer meets OWC’s stated PC, Chromebook or Surface requirements.
- Use an appropriate certified cable and connect directly when maximum bandwidth matters; docks and adapters can become bottlenecks.
- Expect lower throughput when the host interface is slower than Thunderbolt 5.
Capacities and product history
| Capacity information | What is established |
|---|---|
| 2TB | A documented Envoy Ultra SKU using the product line’s specified hardware. |
| 8TB | OWC later announced an 8TB version, expanding the line after launch. |
Capacity, price and stock can change. Check OWC’s live product listing or an authorized seller for the configuration available in your region before ordering; the launch announcement and later capacity notice do not establish present inventory or pricing.

Who benefits from a 6,000 MB/s external SSD?
The Envoy Ultra makes the most sense when your computer has a fast Thunderbolt or USB4 interface and your work regularly involves moving or working from large files. Examples include editing high-resolution media, transferring project archives and keeping active datasets on external storage. Those are plausible use cases for high-throughput storage, not guarantees that a particular application will run at the published maximum.
If your computer only exposes a slower connection, the drive may still function when the interface is supported, but the host—not the SSD’s headline rating—will determine the practical ceiling. Buyers should therefore weigh interface capability and workload alongside capacity.
Rank #4
- Ultra-Fast Thunderbolt 5 Performance: Achieve up to 64Gbps transfer speeds with 80Gbps connection via Thunderbolt 5 for seamless high-speed data access, large file transfers, and demanding workloads.

How to interpret the launch claim today
- Read “up to” literally: 6,000 MB/s is a maximum sequential read/write result from OWC.
- Match the test conditions: The result came from a 2TB unit, OWC Aura Pro IV, Windows 11, an Intel Core i9-14900HX system, 32GB of 5600MHz RAM and AJA System Test’s stated 4K-Full, 64GB single-file setup.
- Check your port: Thunderbolt 5 offers the intended platform, while Thunderbolt 4, supported Thunderbolt 3 systems and USB4 may impose different limits.
- Choose capacity from your files: A later 8TB model exists in the product family, while the documented launch-era SKU was 2TB.
- Verify the current offer: Confirm today’s capacity, price, stock and regional compatibility in a live listing before purchase.
The Bottom Line
The OWC Envoy Ultra is a Thunderbolt 5 portable SSD with an OWC-claimed maximum of 6,000 MB/s sequential read/write. Treat that figure as a qualified laboratory-style result, verify your host port and cable, and check current capacity and stock before buying.
