“The engine runs on your phone” means chess positions are calculated on your device rather than sent to a remote server for analysis. But the claim of “over a million chess reviews a month” is not independently verified by the available listing for the article using that title: it provides no source, definition of “review,” or counting method. Those are separate claims, and the available evidence supports explaining the first—not confirming the second.
What the title establishes—and what it doesn’t
The title appears on a DEV Community listing for an article by Mehdi Ben Haddou, dated September 26, 2026, and tagged WebAssembly. The listing does not expose the article body or supporting evidence. As a result, the monthly figure should be treated as the title’s claim, not as a measured or independently confirmed statistic.
To assess “over a million chess reviews a month,” a reader would need to know what counts as a review—such as a game analysis, a position evaluation, or an individual engine request—as well as the data source, time period, and counting method. The listing supplies none of those details.
What it means for chess analysis to run locally
A chess engine evaluates positions by calculating possible moves and their consequences. In local analysis, that computation takes place on the user’s device. In cloud analysis, the position is sent to a remote service, which performs the calculation and returns results.
#1 Best Overall
- Beautiful chess gameplay
- Tough, customizable AI
- Multiplayer support
- Score tracking and automatic saves
- Undo-move functionality
For a browser-based tool, “on your device” can mean the engine runs inside a browser worker—a background browser process—rather than occupying the page’s main interface thread. Chessyi describes its Stockfish engine as running in a Web Worker in the browser. That is a provider’s description of its own product, not an independent technical audit.
Does local chess analysis need an internet connection?
Not necessarily. An engine already available on a device can calculate a position without sending that calculation to a server. However, an app may still need a connection for other features, such as downloading games, syncing data, or using cloud engines.

The chess.ceo Android app listing says its Stockfish analysis runs locally on-device without an internet connection, and also mentions cloud engines as an option. That describes the app’s stated analysis modes; it does not establish that every feature works offline. The listing identifies Android availability and says it was updated August 18, 2026.

Local and cloud analysis: what actually differs
| Question | Local analysis | Cloud analysis |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the calculation happen? | On the device or in its browser, according to the provider’s description. | On a remote server. |
| Can the calculation work without a connection? | It can if the engine and required data are available locally. chess.ceo says its local Stockfish analysis works offline. | A network connection is needed to send the position and receive the result. |
| What affects response speed? | The device’s computing capability and the engine’s configuration and analysis depth. | The service’s computing resources and the network connection, among other factors. |
| What happens to game data? | Local calculation alone does not show whether other app features upload or sync games. | The position must be sent to the remote service for that calculation; the sources do not establish each service’s retention or privacy practices. |
| Does local mean stronger analysis? | Not established. No independent benchmark is available for the examples above. | Not established. No comparable benchmark is available for cloud analysis in the cited sources. |
What “local” does not prove
- That every feature is offline. An app can offer both on-device and cloud functions.
- That your data never leaves the device. Local engine calculation does not establish how accounts, sync, diagnostics, or other features handle data.
- That analysis is equally fast or strong on every phone. Performance depends on the device, engine settings, and analysis depth; no device tests or comparative benchmarks are available here.
- That the monthly volume claim is verified. The DEV Community listing does not provide the underlying count or method.
How to evaluate a local-analysis claim
- Identify the exact mode. Check whether the provider says the engine itself runs on-device, rather than only saying the app supports offline use.
- Check the connection requirement for the feature. Look for a clear statement about whether analysis works without internet access; distinguish that from syncing, game databases, or cloud-engine options.
- Review data handling separately. A local engine does not answer what an app uploads for other purposes. Consult the provider’s privacy information for those details.
- Look for device-specific evidence. Without comparable tests on your hardware and settings, a local-analysis statement is not a speed or strength guarantee.
What the game-library figures tell you
The provider examples also advertise large collections of master games, but those figures describe libraries—not monthly analysis activity. Chessyi reports 1,917,619 master games on its site. The chess.ceo Google Play listing reports over 11 million master-level games. These are provider-stated figures, not independently audited counts, and neither establishes how many reviews users conduct in a month.
