If Outlook says “We can’t create your rule right now. Please try again later,” the message does not identify a specific cause. First check which Outlook app you’re using and what kind of account the rule is for. New Outlook does not currently support managing rules for Gmail, Yahoo, or iCloud accounts; Microsoft’s recommended route is to create those rules with the email provider.
Check your Outlook app and email account
Outlook rules behave differently depending on the app and account. Identify both before changing settings:
- New Outlook for Windows: Microsoft says it does not currently support rule management for third-party accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud. Create the rule through that provider’s email service instead.
- Outlook on the web or Outlook.com: These support server-side rules.
- Classic Outlook for Windows: It supports server-side rules and some client-side rules, which rely on Outlook running on your device.
Microsoft’s current guidance is in Manage email messages by using rules in Outlook and Edit or fix a broken rule in Outlook.

Recreate the rule with supported conditions and actions
In New Outlook or Outlook.com, you can make a basic rule from a message or create one through Settings > Mail > Rules. A rule needs a name, a condition, and an action; exceptions are optional. If you are using another Outlook version, use its rule settings to review or recreate the rule.

- Used Book in Good Condition
- Open the rule settings in your Outlook app. In New Outlook or Outlook.com, select Settings > Mail > Rules.
- Create a rule with a name, one condition, and one action. Keep the first attempt simple.
- If it saves, add any further conditions, actions, or exceptions you need, checking after each change.
This step-by-step approach can help identify whether a particular condition or action is incompatible with the client you are using.
Understand server-side and client-side rules
New Outlook, Outlook on the web, and Outlook.com support server-side rules only. These run on the mail server rather than depending on Outlook being open on your computer.

- Used Book in Good Condition
A client-side rule depends on Outlook features on the device and may run only while classic Outlook for Windows is open with the account that created it. If a rule made in classic Outlook will not work in another Outlook client, recreate it using conditions and actions the target client supports. If it depends on a client-side feature, you may need to keep using it in classic Outlook.
If the rule is compatible but still will not save
Microsoft’s guidance does not attribute this exact error to one cause. A third-party troubleshooting article suggests checking connection, updates, add-ins, the Outlook profile, Office repair, and rule limits, but those are possibilities—not confirmed explanations for this message. Try these checks only after confirming the account and rule are supported:

- Check that Outlook is connected, then try saving the rule again.
- Check for available Office updates.
- If the problem continues in classic Outlook, test whether an add-in or profile issue is involved. Changes to add-ins or profiles can affect other Outlook behavior, so make them cautiously.
- Consider Office repair only if simpler checks do not help.
TheWindowsClub’s article about this exact message, published September 24, 2026, discusses these as troubleshooting suggestions: We can’t create your rule right now says Outlook. Its cited 256 KB rule-limit figure is not corroborated by the Microsoft guidance linked above, so do not treat that number as established Microsoft guidance.
