“Out with the Old, In with the New Old Stock” is about a specific Macintosh SE/30 rebuild: rather than rescue a badly corroded original logic board, the project used a modern reproduction board populated with new and new old stock (NOS) components where available. The result combines modern internals with a vintage CRT, a clear reproduction case, solid-state storage and RGB lighting.

Why replace the SE/30 logic board?

Nick Bild’s Hackster.io feature describes an original motherboard with leaking electrolytic capacitors, corroded traces and corrosion affecting many chips. Instead of attempting a component-by-component repair, the builder chose a reproduction PCB based on an existing design. Bild describes the choice this way: “Instead of fixing the original ailing motherboard, a modern reproduction PCB was produced from an existing design.” Read the Hackster.io feature.

The rebuild used new chips and NOS parts where possible, and nearly all of the sockets and connectors could also be bought new. One exception was the floppy controller: the builder reused it from the old board because a replacement was not available at a reasonable price. Part availability is time-sensitive, so this is a description of that build rather than a guarantee about what can be sourced today.

What does new old stock mean here?

NOS means older, unused stock rather than newly manufactured components. In this project, NOS was one way to source chips for a modern reproduction board when suitable new parts were not available. It is not interchangeable with “newly made”: age, storage condition, provenance and compatibility matter when evaluating a specific part. The feature reports the project’s sourcing choices but does not verify particular sellers or provide a method for authenticating NOS listings.

  • Renewed products look and work like new. These pre-owned products have been inspected and tested by Amazon-qualified suppliers, which typically perform a full diagnostic test, replacement of any defective parts, and a thorough cleaning process. Packaging and accessories may be generic. All products on Amazon Renewed come with a minimum 90-day supplier-backed warranty.

Why didn’t the reproduction board work at first?

The replacement logic board failed during its initial test in a real SE/30. The feature reports that troubleshooting uncovered a component-identification error: parts thought to be diodes were actually transistors. After correcting the mistake, the Mac started. This is the project’s reported troubleshooting outcome, not an independently replicated test or a universal diagnosis for failed SE/30 boards.

The episode also shows why a reproduction PCB is a platform for rebuilding, not a plug-and-play fix. Component identification, soldering and fault-finding still matter.

What did the finished rebuild keep and change?

The project made its modernization visible instead of hiding it inside an original-looking shell. Its components were a deliberate mix of vintage hardware and replacements:

  • Display: an original CRT, driven by a reproduction analog board.
  • Enclosure: a clear reproduction SE/30 case that exposes the internals.
  • Storage: a modern solid-state replacement disk in place of a mechanical hard drive.
  • Drive sound: a relay added drive-access clicks.
  • Lighting: RGB LEDs installed in the clear case.

These choices prioritize a visible, retro-modern presentation. The feature does not provide comparative measurements of the solid-state disk’s performance or reliability against an original mechanical drive.

What a separate SE/30 restoration adds to the picture

A May 2026 account from Adam’s Vintage Computer Restorations describes a different SE/30 with damage from a leaking PRAM battery and leaking surface-mount electrolytic capacitors. In that case, damaged pads, traces and vias made saving the original board impractical. The restorer used a community-designed reproduction PCB, transferred some original chips, bought replacement parts and used NOS for a handful of custom Apple ICs that were not available as ordinary off-the-shelf parts. Read the May 2026 restoration account.

That separate repair also involved extensive soldering and testing, difficult troubleshooting, and help from a more experienced compact-Mac repairer. The machine eventually booted from a BlueSCSI storage device. BlueSCSI belongs to that restoration, not to the Hackster rebuild; the two accounts do not establish a performance or reliability comparison between storage options.

How to think about the restoration choices

The sources document individual builds, not a controlled comparison. The following trade-offs are a way to frame the choices, not measured findings:

Decision Options shown in these builds What the accounts establish
Logic board Repair the original or rebuild on a reproduction PCB The Hackster project chose a reproduction board after finding corrosion on the original. The separate restoration also used a reproduction board after extensive damage; neither account establishes that replacement is best for every SE/30.
Parts New parts, NOS components or reused donor components The featured build used new and NOS parts where possible and reused its floppy controller. The separate restoration transferred some original chips and used NOS for some custom Apple ICs.
Appearance Keep an original-style exterior or display the internals The Hackster project chose a clear reproduction case. The account does not compare its fit or durability with an original case.
Storage Solid-state replacement disk or SCSI-to-SD storage The featured build used a solid-state replacement disk; the separate restoration reports booting from BlueSCSI. The sources do not compare speed, compatibility across revisions or reliability.
