A watchdog can repeatedly restart a healthy agent if it treats silence as proof of failure. In a September 2026 first-person account, developer Erik Bagdaer says his gateway was restarted almost exactly once an hour because the watchdog looked for recent Telegram log activity—even though an idle long-polling process could be working normally. The account is a useful troubleshooting case, not an independently verified study.

What happened in Bagdaer’s reported setup

Bagdaer describes an unattended agent system with a gateway, a model behind it, vector memory, and about 70 scheduled jobs. Its watchdog looked for a [telegram] log line in the preceding 30 minutes. If it found none, but could still reach the Telegram API, it classified the gateway as hung and kickstarted it.

The flaw, in his account, was that Telegram long polling could be idle without generating a new log line. The watchdog therefore used recent traffic as a proxy for process health. Bagdaer says the source code itself warned that idle long polling produces no log lines. His explanation is that a healthy but quiet gateway looked stale to the check; this is his diagnosis of his installation, not a finding independently verified elsewhere.

Why the log looked fine while the process kept restarting

The watchdog’s messages recorded its decisions, not a one-to-one count of actual process restarts. Bagdaer says his initial log-line count did not reveal the true restart frequency. He instead sampled process age over three and a half days and reports exactly 24 restarts per day.

Across 79 consecutive intervals, he reports a mean gap of 3,603.2 seconds, a standard deviation of 0.65 seconds, and a range of 3,602 to 3,606 seconds. He also reports 2,688 kickstart log lines over 126 days, and says that during the sampled window the log produced four kickstart lines per actual restart. In his last 200 logged decisions, he says every one indicated that the Telegram API was reachable, the gateway was Telegram-stale, and it should be kickstarted. These are measurements reported by Bagdaer in his article, not independent measurements.

The nearly hourly spacing supports his interpretation that the restart pattern followed the watchdog’s checking logic rather than spontaneous crashes. It does not, by itself, establish how another agent framework or installation will behave.

How to distinguish an idle agent from a hung one

A useful health check measures evidence that matches the process’s intended job. For a service that can legitimately sit idle, the absence of new application logs is weak evidence of failure. A progress signal generated by the work itself is more informative: for example, the agent can update a heartbeat file after completing a unit of work, and the watchdog can act only when that progress signal is stale.

  • Track process state separately from log activity. Record process start time or age and actual exit/restart events instead of inferring restarts from watchdog messages.
  • Define what counts as progress. Tie the heartbeat to completed work or another meaningful checkpoint, not simply to incoming traffic.
  • Allow for legitimate quiet periods. Set the staleness threshold to accommodate the longest expected idle interval and the time a unit of work may reasonably take.
  • Test both sides of the check. Confirm that the service stays up during a normal quiet period and that a deliberately stuck process is recovered.

Bagdaer’s formulation is: “Measure the process, not its opinion of itself.” He also writes, “If your liveness signal is traffic, your agent will be restarted hardest at night, when nothing is wrong.” The latter is his summary of the incident, not a universal measured rule.

What Bagdaer proposes as a remedy

His proposed fix is a work-generated progress heartbeat: have the agent touch a file after finishing a unit of work, then let the watchdog restart the process only when that file has gone stale. This changes the signal from “Did a log line appear recently?” to “Has the work made expected progress?” The right heartbeat interval and recovery behavior depend on the agent’s workload; the reported case does not establish one setting for every system.

Bagdaer links an open-source agent-uptime-kit repository, which his article describes as including a progress-based watchdog, a spending proxy and ledger, and launchd and systemd templates. He also says its harness can run without a paid key. Those are descriptions and claims in his article; check the repository itself for current contents and instructions before using it.

How to interpret the article’s broader claims

Bagdaer discloses that he works on macyou.co, which rents Apple Silicon machines, and has a stake in where people run agents. His deployment comments should be weighed with that commercial context. He argues that a Linux VPS suits most agents, while a dedicated Mac may fit workloads needing local-model memory, macOS automation, Apple-platform builds, or circumstances where token costs exceed rent. The account does not provide an independent price comparison or show that any particular hosting product is required to fix this watchdog problem.

The same article reports a small harness comparison of LangGraph 1.2.11, OpenAI Agents SDK 0.22.3, and CrewAI 1.15.22, with tests involving tool failures, HTTP 500/429 responses, invalid JSON, token counts, and state survival. Those versions are stated as of September 20, 2026. The comparison is ancillary to the restart incident; its results are the author’s harness output and should not be generalized without reviewing and rerunning the linked code.
