Jana Marie Hemsing’s Otter-Iron PRO makes a JBC T245 soldering handle easier to use away from a conventional bench: it is a compact USB-C Power Delivery controller, not a self-contained or battery-powered travel iron. You still need a compatible handle, tip cartridge, and USB-PD power source, and the project’s revision notes make it important to check the latest build guidance before assembling one.
What the Otter-Iron PRO is—and what it is not
The Otter-Iron PRO is a DIY soldering controller designed for a separate JBC C245-family handle. It takes power from a USB-C Power Delivery source and controls the attached iron; it does not contain a soldering tip or its own battery. The project’s GitHub repository describes firmware that requests a 30 W or 80 W USB-PD profile, sets a current limit according to the profile available, and prevents MOSFET drive when the source does not advertise a compatible profile.
That makes “solder on the go” a portability claim about the small controller and the ability to use a suitable USB-PD source—not a promise that the whole setup is cordless. You will need to bring the handle and power source, and the power source must support a profile compatible with the exact board and firmware revision.

JBC T245 handle and C245 cartridges
The design is intended for the JBC C245 handle family. Hackaday’s April 21, 2020 report describes it with a standard JBC T245-A handle. C245 is also the relevant cartridge family. These references do not establish compatibility with every handle, connector variant, cartridge, or board revision, so check the connector and cartridge requirements for the particular build before buying parts.

USB-C Power Delivery source
This is USB-C PD-powered, not simply powered by any USB-C port or charger. The repository’s firmware summary names 30 W and 80 W profile requests and says the controller adjusts its current limit to the advertised profile. Match the PD capabilities to the requirements of the design and firmware revision you intend to build; a generic USB-C charger is not guaranteed to work. A compatible USB-PD source is also not the same thing as a battery included in the iron.
How portable is the controller?
Hackster’s project feature describes a compact controller board measuring 30 mm × 45 mm × 25 mm. It also identifies a USB-C connector, an STUSB4500, an OLED for feedback, and a JBC handle connector on a daughterboard. Those are the dimensions and components reported in that feature, rather than independent measurements.

The small board can reduce the size of a portable soldering setup, but the setup still includes the separate handle and power source. It is therefore a different category from an integrated cordless soldering iron, which carries its own battery.
Temperature control and the five-second claim
Hackaday reports that the controller reads the iron tip’s thermistor for closed-loop temperature control. The same 2020 article attributes to Hemsing a claim that the iron reached its setpoint from a cold start in five seconds, roughly matching an original JBC base station. That is an author-reported performance claim relayed by Hackaday, not an independent test result; actual warm-up can depend on the handle, cartridge, power source, and conditions.

Check revision maturity before building
The surfaced version notes in the project repository describe v1.0 as tested but “not great,” v1.1 as untested and not expected to be tested, and v2.0 as tested but potentially much more stable. Repository activity is reported through April 8, 2025, but the available summary does not establish which revision the author currently recommends. Do not assume a revision is production-ready: review the current repository documentation and issue history, confirm which revision you plan to build, and verify its handle and PD-source requirements first.

- Controller design files and current build guidance: use the Otter-Iron PRO repository to identify the revision and its requirements.
- JBC T245 soldering handle: this is the clearest handle reference in the reporting, but confirm the exact connector compatibility for your board revision.
- JBC C245 cartridge: choose a cartridge compatible with the handle and intended soldering work.
- USB-C PD source: confirm it supplies a profile supported by your selected design and firmware; USB-C alone does not guarantee compatibility.
The project is a hardware design, not evidence of a currently stocked finished consumer product or kit. A PCB fabrication or assembly service may be useful to a builder, but check the repository for the files and assembly details needed for the particular revision.
