Orion smart glasses are Meta’s prototype augmented-reality glasses, designed to show digital images through transparent lenses so they appear alongside the wearer’s view of the real world. Meta says the prototype is not available to the public, and it has not stated a retail price or firm consumer release date in the official sources cited here.
What are Orion smart glasses?
Meta introduced Orion on September 25, 2024, describing it as its first “true” augmented-reality (AR) glasses. Project Nazare was the earlier codename. Unlike a conventional headset that blocks much of the wearer’s surroundings, Orion is designed to look and function more like glasses: the wearer can see people and the physical environment through transparent lenses while digital content appears in that view. Meta’s announcement describes the product’s design goal and initial experiences.
Here, “AR glasses” means a wearable that adds digital imagery to the wearer’s view of the physical world. Orion’s defining feature is its see-through holographic display, not simply its cameras or AI assistant.

Meta’s Orion product page describes a system built from display optics, sensors, input devices, and a separate wireless compute puck. The details below are Meta’s descriptions of a prototype, not independently verified performance claims or specifications for a shipping consumer device.

- Tracking and sensing: Custom silicon, miniaturized cameras, and sensors are described as supporting eye, hand, and world tracking.
- Ways to interact: Meta lists voice, eye tracking, hand tracking, and an electromyography (EMG) wristband. The wristband detects muscle signals at the wrist as an input method.
- Computing: A wireless compute puck is part of the described system, rather than all computing being housed in the glasses.
What can Orion do?
In its 2024 announcement, Meta described early experiences that were still being iterated. Its examples included Meta AI interpreting what the wearer is looking at and offering a visualization—for example, suggesting recipes based on food in a refrigerator—as well as hands-free video calls and sending or viewing WhatsApp and Messenger messages. These examples describe the prototype’s intended experiences at announcement time; they should not be read as a promise about a public product or final feature set. Meta’s announcement
Can you buy Meta Orion glasses?
No. Meta’s product page says Orion is “not available to the public.” Meta said the prototype itself would not reach consumers and described access for employees and selected external audiences to gather feedback and develop its consumer AR-glasses work. The reviewed official sources state no retail price or firm consumer release date. A reference in the 2024 announcement to the “near future” is not a current launch commitment. Meta’s Orion page

How is Orion different from Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
Meta describes Ray-Ban Meta as display-less glasses for hands-free access to an AI assistant, communication, and capture. Orion’s distinguishing feature is a see-through holographic display intended to put digital content into the physical environment. What does “prototype” mean for Orion?
Orion is a development prototype, so its announced design and capabilities should not be treated as the final specifications, features, or availability of a future consumer product. Meta’s chief technology officer and Head of Reality Labs, Andrew Bosworth, wrote in December 2024: “But the real impact of Orion will be in the products we ship next and the ways it helps us better understand what people love about AR glasses and what needs to get better.” Bosworth’s article
