“Organic electricity generator” refers here to a 2007 laboratory experiment, not a consumer product: researchers measured voltage produced by a temperature difference across individual carbon-based molecules connected between gold electrodes. The work demonstrated molecular-scale thermoelectricity, but did not demonstrate a practical generator.
What is an organic electricity generator?
In the 2007 Chemistry World headline, “organic” means carbon-based molecules, and “generator” describes a research concept. It does not mean a device powered by organic waste, microbes, or a living organism. The experiment applied the Seebeck effect: a temperature difference across a material or junction can produce a voltage.
Pramod Reddy, Sung-Yeon Jang, Rachel A. Segalman, and Arun Majumdar reported the study in Science in 2007. They measured molecular junctions in which organic molecules contacted gold electrodes. The work examined thermoelectric behavior at the scale of a molecular junction; it did not report the electrical output of a packaged generator.

Yes, in the limited experimental sense demonstrated in this study. The Berkeley team coated gold electrodes with molecules and heated one side to create a temperature difference. The university announcement says the largest tested difference was 30°C. At room temperature, the researchers measured positive Seebeck coefficients for all three molecular junctions. In the paper, the positive sign indicated p-type, or hole, conduction in these heterojunctions.

What molecules did the researchers test?
The study compared three molecules with one, two, or three phenyl units. The values below are the room-temperature junction Seebeck coefficients reported by Reddy and colleagues in 2007; the uncertainties are those given in the paper.
| Molecule | Phenyl units | Seebeck coefficient |
|---|---|---|
| 1,4-benzenedithiol (BDT) | One | +8.7 ± 2.1 μV/K |
| 4,4′-dibenzenedithiol | Two | +12.9 ± 2.2 μV/K |
| 4,4″-tribenzenedithiol | Three | +14.2 ± 3.2 μV/K |
The three values are measurements of junction Seebeck coefficient, not measures of a complete generator’s power or efficiency. The highest coefficient alone therefore does not establish which molecule would make the best practical device.

What the result does—and does not—establish
The result was a proof of concept and a measurement advance: it showed that a temperature difference across organic molecular junctions could produce a measurable thermoelectric voltage. The paper presented the work as a way to study molecular electronic structure and begin exploring thermoelectric energy conversion.

- It establishes: measurable thermoelectric behavior in the tested molecular junctions under laboratory conditions.
- It does not establish: useful device-level power, conversion efficiency, durability, manufacturability, or commercial availability.
- It does not describe: a retail generator, household power source, or consumer kit.
The researchers saw potential in organic materials because they may be abundant and easier to process. That was a motivation for further exploration, not evidence that an inexpensive plastic-like generator or refrigerator had been built. Contemporary expert commentary also cautioned that the molecules tested were far from being efficient energy materials.

“Organic electricity generator” can sound like a finished product or a way to turn biological or household organic matter into electricity. Neither interpretation matches the story. The 2007 report concerned a controlled experiment on molecular junctions between gold electrodes. Its finding is scientifically notable, but it should not be read as a claim that organic-molecule generators are available to buy or ready to supply practical power.
