The Optoma UHD35 pairs 4K projection at up to 60Hz with unusually fast 1080p gaming at up to 240Hz, but it is a basic lamp-based projector—not a smart TV replacement. It may suit a buyer who prioritizes responsive big-screen gaming and can accept careful placement, external streaming gear, and eventual lamp costs. Optoma now marks the model discontinued, so this is a review for anyone considering remaining stock or a used unit, not a claim that it is currently available.

What the Optoma UHD35 offers

Optoma specifies a single-chip DLP projector with a 3840×2160 UHD resolution, rated brightness of 3,600 lumens, two HDMI 2.0 inputs, and a 33–300-inch diagonal image range. The maximum image size depends on the room and lighting; it is not a promise of a bright, usable 300-inch picture in every setup. Its official product page labels the UHD35 discontinued: Optoma UHD35 product page.

Its distinguishing feature is the combination of 4K playback up to 60Hz and high-refresh 1080p gaming. That flexibility comes with limits: it has no built-in smart operating system or wireless integration, and its placement options are more constrained than those of projectors with substantial lens shift.

Is the Optoma UHD35 good for gaming?

It can be a strong fit for gaming if you want a large projected image and prioritize high frame rates at 1080p. Optoma advertises 1080p at 240Hz and 4.2ms input lag. In its June 2021 review, ProjectorCentral measured 4.2ms with a 1080p/240Hz signal, 8.9ms with a 120Hz console input, and 16.7ms at 4K/60Hz. Those figures describe different input modes, not a single lag figure that applies to every resolution and refresh rate.

ProjectorCentral’s reviewer John Higgins praised its detail and response, writing, “The Optoma UHD35 achieves what it sets out to do, and does it well.” The trade-off is that an input above 60Hz is limited to 1080p, according to that review. If your priority is 4K gaming above 60Hz, the UHD35’s headline 240Hz specification does not meet that need.

Enhanced Gaming mode also disables some image and geometry adjustments, including zoom and keystone. Plan to get the image positioned correctly before relying on that mode; digital adjustments can reduce brightness, and you should not assume that the full range of setup controls remains available while gaming.

Does the Optoma UHD35 support 4K at 120Hz?

No documented mode combines 4K resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate. Optoma specifies 4K up to 60Hz and 1080p up to 240Hz; ProjectorCentral reports that input above 60Hz is limited to 1080p. For a console or PC, choose based on whether you value 4K detail at 60Hz or a higher refresh rate at 1080p.

How does its picture look for movies?

Reviewer assessments suggest the UHD35 is more compelling for sharpness and gaming responsiveness than for buyers seeking particularly accurate, vivid color or deep contrast. RTINGS describes movie performance in a dark room as decent but says color accuracy is only okay and colors can look dim. ProjectorCentral praised 4K detail but found contrast average. These are reviewer assessments, not guarantees for every screen, room, picture mode, or individual unit.

Brightness claims also need context. Optoma rates the projector at 3,600 lumens. ProjectorCentral measured a maximum of 2,681 ANSI lumens across two samples in its 2021 review, which it reported as 77.3% of the published specification. A manufacturer rating and a reviewer’s measured result are not interchangeable; room lighting, screen size, settings, and image preferences affect whether the picture looks bright enough. Optoma advises avoiding direct sunlight or light aimed at the screen for its lights-on viewing guidance.

How far back does the UHD35 need to be for a 100-inch screen?

The official throw ratio is 1.5:1–1.66:1, with a 1.1× manual zoom. For a 100-inch 16:9 image, the image is about 87 inches wide. Multiplying that width by the stated ratio gives an approximate lens-to-screen distance of 130.5–144.4 inches, or about 10 feet 10 inches to 12 feet. Treat this as a planning estimate: confirm the actual image size and placement using Optoma’s official product page before buying or mounting, and leave room to accommodate the projector body and cable connections.

The UHD35 lists vertical lens shift as +0%, so it offers no vertical lens-shift adjustment. ProjectorCentral advises careful initial placement because digital image adjustments can reduce brightness; Enhanced Gaming mode disables zoom and keystone as well. Measure the throw distance and intended image size first, and check that the projected image can be aligned without depending on adjustments unavailable in your preferred mode.

What does the UHD35 need for streaming?

The projector has two HDMI 2.0 inputs and a USB-A port that can power an HDMI streaming dongle. RTINGS reports that it has no built-in smart OS or wireless integration. If you want streaming apps, plan on connecting an external streamer; if you already use a console, PC, or streaming device, one of the HDMI inputs can serve that source.

How long does the lamp last, and which replacement lamp fits?

Optoma rates lamp life at up to 4,000 hours in Bright mode, 10,000 hours in Eco, and 15,000 hours in Dynamic. These are rated maximums that vary by mode, not guaranteed replacement intervals. The replacement lamp identified in Optoma’s datasheet is BL-FU240E. Check the exact model and regional compatibility before ordering; Optoma’s product page and datasheet provide the manufacturer references.

ProjectorCentral quoted a $249 lamp price in its June 2021 review. That is historical pricing, not a current replacement cost. When evaluating a used or remaining-stock unit, account for the lamp’s condition and the possibility of a future replacement rather than assuming a particular purchase date or current price.

How does it compare with alternatives?

RTINGS identifies the Epson Home Cinema 3800, ViewSonic PX701-4K, and BenQ TK700STi as relevant comparisons. Its specific comparisons of the Epson and BenQ help frame the UHD35’s trade-offs, but do not establish that one model is best for every room or use.

Model What RTINGS says relative to the UHD35
Epson Home Cinema 3800 RTINGS says it offers better overall image quality; the UHD35’s advantage is 1080p/240Hz gaming.
BenQ TK700STi RTINGS describes it as similar for gaming and says it includes a streaming dongle and wireless features the UHD35 lacks.
ViewSonic PX701-4K RTINGS lists it as a relevant comparison; the cited comparison information does not establish a specific advantage over the UHD35.

Who should consider the UHD35?

  • Consider it if 1080p high-refresh gaming, 4K/60Hz playback, and a large projected image matter more to you than built-in streaming or extensive lens adjustment.
  • Look elsewhere if you need 4K at 120Hz, wireless or smart features built into the projector, or a more forgiving installation with vertical lens shift.
  • Check before buying if considering a used unit or remaining stock: verify lamp condition, calculate the throw distance for your screen, and include a possible compatible lamp in your ownership-cost estimate.
