True Food Kitchen filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on October 4, 2026, and announced that 12 restaurants had closed. According to Fox Business reporting from that week, 34 restaurants in 14 states remained open. The company says the remaining locations are serving guests as usual while it restructures and pursues a court-supervised sale process. Oprah Winfrey is a minority investor, but reporting says she has no board seat and no role in daily management.

What Chapter 11 means for True Food Kitchen right now

Chapter 11 is a reorganization process. A company that files continues to operate under court supervision while it works out its debts and looks for a way forward. It is not, by itself, a liquidation. True Food Kitchen’s own FAQ answers the question directly: “Is True Food Kitchen going out of business?” The company’s position is that its open restaurants are welcoming guests during the process, and that the filing is a way to keep operating while it makes changes to strengthen the business and its finances.

The company’s stated next step is a court-supervised sale process in which it is seeking a long-term partner. As of the reporting available in early October 2026, no buyer has been identified. Fox Business also reported an approximately $20 million financing commitment from HumanCo TFK IV, subject to court approval. That commitment should be treated as pending until a court record confirms approval.

The 12 closed restaurants

Fox Business identified the closed locations as follows. These closures were announced alongside the filing.

  • California: Century City, El Segundo, and San Diego UTC

  • Illinois: Chicago
  • Louisiana: New Orleans
  • Maryland: Bethesda
  • New Jersey: Edison and Hackensack
  • New York: Garden City
  • Ohio: Columbus
  • Virginia: Reston

Reporting said 34 restaurants remained open across 14 states. That count is a figure from the time of the announcement. Restaurant status can change, so check the official location directory before making a trip.

Will my visit, order or booking still work?

The company’s FAQ addresses ordinary customer questions for open locations. According to that FAQ:

  • Menu and pricing: The company says there are no menu or pricing changes as a result of the filing.
  • Reservations: Available at open restaurants, subject to normal availability.
  • Delivery and catering: Continue at open restaurants, subject to normal availability.
  • Gift cards: Can be used at open restaurants.

Before you go, confirm three things: that the location is on the official list of open restaurants, that the service you need is offered there, and that a reservation or catering date is actually available. If a location you visit regularly is on the closure list above, the gift card and reservation questions will need to be resolved with the company directly. The company’s FAQ and the Chapter 11 case information site it links to are the places to check for updates on how claims and gift cards are handled.

The financial figures, and who said them

The following numbers come from recent reporting that cites court documents and company statements. They have not been independently checked against the bankruptcy docket for this article.

Figure Amount or status Attributed to
Funded debt obligations at filing Approximately $42.1 million Chief Restructuring Officer Nathan Cook, as reported by Fox Business from court documents
Unrestricted cash at filing Approximately $1.6 million Financial adviser George N. Koutsonicolis, as reported by Fox Business from court documents
Financing commitment Approximately $20 million, subject to court approval; not confirmed as approved True Food Kitchen, as reported by Fox Business
Closures and open locations 12 closed; 34 open across 14 states True Food Kitchen and Fox Business reporting

Read these figures as a snapshot from the filing period. Debt and cash levels change quickly in a Chapter 11 case, and the court record is the authoritative source for later numbers.

The reasons management gives for the decline

The clearest explanation in the reporting comes from a court declaration by Nathan Cook. Fox Business quoted him as saying:

“The Company experienced significant management turnover, which resulted in frequent changes to expansion strategy, brand direction, and menu offerings.”

According to the same reporting, Cook also pointed to:

  • New products and restaurant concepts that did not succeed and drifted from the company’s health-focused mission.
  • Pandemic-era ghost-kitchen and delivery-only experiments that reportedly hurt staffing and service.
  • Some restaurants struggling to attract traffic.
  • Profitability eroding in some markets as local conditions changed.

These are management’s account, given in court materials. They are not an independently verified full explanation, and no outside analysis of the causes is cited in the reporting.

The company’s chief executive, Jeff Chandler, framed the filing as a step toward focus: “This process is the best path forward to simplify the business and focus on what we do best: delivering craveable, health-forward food and genuine hospitality,” as quoted in Fox Business.

What Oprah Winfrey’s role is, and is not

The “Oprah-backed” label refers to an investment. Fox Business reported that Winfrey made an equity investment in 2018 and remains a minority investor. The outlet also reported that she has no representative on the board and is not involved in day-to-day management. Nothing in the reporting says she controls the restructuring or the sale process. The label describes ownership history, not operating authority.
