I’ve hardly played Elden Ring, yet it remains one of my favourite games. That sounds like a contradiction only if a favourite has to mean a game I’ve finished, mastered, or sunk dozens of hours into. Sometimes a handful of encounters and the feeling of a world are enough to make a game matter.
How a game can become a favourite before you’ve played much of it
My attachment to Elden Ring comes with an obvious limit: I have not played enough to speak as if I know every region, system, or late-game challenge. I can only claim the moments I did experience. But those moments were vivid enough to leave an impression that outlasted my time with the game.
That distinction matters. Calling a game a favourite is not the same as calling it a game I have completed or can recommend from exhaustive experience. It is a personal response to what I encountered—and Elden Ring made a strong impression before I had seen most of what it contains.
Why Elden Ring makes that contradiction plausible
Elden Ring is an action RPG set in a dark fantasy world, built around open fields, dungeons, and challenges that shape progression. Its appeal is not confined to a sequence of missions; the world invites detours and discovery. Bandai Namco’s 2024 corporate material described the game as having shipped more than 23 million units worldwide, counting packaged distribution and digital sales, including Steam. The freedom to explore is paired with a combat system that can be punishing. FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki told PlayStation.Blog that he wanted new players to feel “unpressured” and able to approach the game at their own pace; he also described returning to an obstacle later rather than repeatedly hitting a wall. The design offers room to step away from a difficult encounter and pursue another route, but that does not make the encounter itself easy. Miyazaki’s PlayStation.Blog interview
Can you play Elden Ring at your own pace?
Yes, in the sense that the game gives you options about where to go and when to try a challenge again—not in the sense that it has a conventional easy-mode setting. Bandai Namco Europe notes that players can explore, choose routes, summon other players, use Spirit Ashes, and change builds. It can be, if you are comfortable making progress in pieces and accepting that a session may involve exploration, a failed attempt, or simply learning an enemy. Its open structure gives you alternatives when one path stalls. But it is fair to treat the scale and challenge as real costs, not assume that flexible progression makes it a quick or low-effort game.

A TechCrunch reviewer wrote in 2022 that, even with helpful difficulty workarounds, playing Elden Ring would be a time commitment some casual gamers could not take on. That is one reviewer’s qualitative judgment, not an average completion-time measurement. A separate TechRadar reviewer reported playing about sixty hours for a 2026 review of the Switch 2 Tarnished Edition, mainly in handheld mode; that is a single reviewer’s experience, not a typical required playtime. For my own limited play, the honest answer is not that the game secretly fits every schedule. It is that a game can give you something memorable without demanding that you finish it before you are allowed to value it. I have not played enough to judge the whole of Elden Ring; I have played enough to know why it stayed with me.

What to know before picking it up
If you want to try it, choose the edition for your platform. Bandai Namco’s official page lists the base game, editions that include Shadow of the Erdtree, and a Tarnished Edition for Nintendo Switch 2; the expansion requires the base game. Edition and platform availability can change, so check the official Elden Ring page for current details.
